The New Berlin Public Library is seeking an organized, enthusiastic, and community oriented Adult Services Library Intern. The Adult Services Intern will gain experience in developing and implementing services, programming, and outreach for adult and teen patrons, and assisting the librarian team to curate an up-to-date and balanced collection of materials. The ideal candidate for this position will be able to work both independently and collaboratively with our librarian team. Candidates pursuing a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science with a passion for service and a dedication to creating positive experiences for everyone in the library are encouraged to apply.
Primary Functions: The Adult Services Intern will work with the Adult Services team to gain hands-on experience in providing excellent customer service to library patrons, assisting patrons with reference services, planning and conducting engaging programs, promoting the library to the community, managing library collections, and creating a vibrant and welcoming area for patrons of all ages.
- Provides reference service to library patrons
- Instructs library users in the use of public access catalog, internet and other library resources
- Assists Adult Services Librarians with programming and collection development projects
- Presents a positive image when representing the library at community outreach events
- Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to understand library principles, procedures, technology, goals, and philosophy of service, and apply them to library operations.
- Ability to use knowledge and training to serve the needs of the library productively, in addition to a willingness to commit to professional growth through continuing education.
- Ability to meet, communicate and work with patrons and co-workers effectively.
- Ability to comprehend and follow instructions, both verbally and in written form, in a timely manner.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Good oral, written and computer skills including a proficiency with Microsoft Office products; must be able to assist patrons with computer-related questions.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and special events as required.
- Pursuing a Master's degree in Library and Information Science or related discipline.
