Utility Technician

Job Summary
Under general supervision, the Utility Technician performs duties related to water distribution, sewer collection, and street maintenance. This position requires operation of various City equipment and the ability to perform a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Water Distribution & Sewer Collection
- Tap and connect water and sewer services to mains
- Install and repair water mains, sewer mains, and valves
- Maintain and repair manholes and fire hydrants
- Turn on, shut off, and maintain meters and setters
- Operate equipment such as track hoe, skid steer, and hydro-excavation truck
- Assist other Utility Technicians as needed
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Street Department
- Repair and replace street signs
- Install, repair, and replace culverts
- Perform asphalt street maintenance
- Operate and maintain mowers, trimmers, and dump trucks
- Maintain rights-of-way, City parks, and aquatic center
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Equipment Operation & Maintenance
- Perform routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles
- Safely operate equipment including: track hoe, skid steer, backhoe, dump truck, hydro-excavation truck, street sweeper, asphalt roller, mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, pumps, and other tools in accordance with manufacturer guidelines
Additional Requirements
- Must be available for emergency on-call duty 24/7
- May be required to work weekends and holidays
- Subject to a six (6) month probationary period
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to safely and effectively operate City equipment
- Knowledge of excavation, drainage, trenching, and related construction work
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Understanding of safety standards and practices
- Ability to perform physically demanding labor, including lifting, standing, walking, bending, pushing, pulling, and digging
Working Conditions
- Work performed in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind
- Exposure to chemicals, gases, fumes, dust, insects, and high noise levels
- Work around uneven, slippery, or steep surfaces and moving hazards such as traffic
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- At least 18 years of age
- Valid Ohio driver’s license
- Must obtain a Class B CDL with tanker endorsement within one (1) year of hire
Supervision
Reports to the City Service Director and/or City Manager
Schedule
Monday through Friday, 8-hour day shift
Nights, weekends, and on-call as needed
