City of Nelsonville Police Department

Pay: $25.63 - $28.84 per hour (based on step placement)

Status: Full-Time

Department: Police

Reports To: Sergeant / Shift Supervisor

Position Summary

The City of Nelsonville is seeking 2 qualified candidates for the position of Patrol Officer. Under general supervision, a Patrol Officer is responsible for enforcing laws, preventing crime, and protecting life and property. Officers perform patrol operations, respond to calls for service, conduct investigations, enforce traffic laws, and engage in community policing efforts while completing necessary administrative and technical tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Patrols assigned areas on foot or in a vehicle to maintain public safety and deter criminal activity

· Enforce federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and department policies

· Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service in a timely manner

· Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations; collect, preserve, and document evidence

· Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects

· Apprehend and arrest individuals in accordance with applicable laws and procedures

· Prepare accurate and detailed reports, affidavits, warrants, and other legal documentation

· Testify in court and present evidence as required

· Engage with community members to build trust and promote positive police-community relations

· Coordinate activities with other law enforcement and public safety agencies

· Participate in required training and maintain all certifications and qualifications

· Safely operate and maintain department vehicles, firearms, and other equipment

· Provide traffic control and crowd management at incidents and public events

· Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Sound judgment and decision-making in high-pressure situations

· Strong verbal and written communication skills

· Ability to analyze situations and apply critical thinking

· Proficient in the safe use of law enforcement equipment and technology

· Ability to de-escalate conflicts and manage volatile situations

· Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team

· Maintain professionalism and integrity in all public interactions

· Flexibility to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Minimum Qualifications

· High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred

· Prior law enforcement or related experience preferred

· Current OPOTA certification required (or ability to obtain prior to appointment, if applicable to your hiring process)

· Valid State of Ohio driver’s license with an acceptable driving record

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This position requires work in a variety of environments, including outdoor and emergency conditions. Duties may involve running, lifting, climbing, and physically restraining individuals. Officers must have the ability to see, hear, and communicate effectively, with or without reasonable accommodation. The position requires working rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
