Position Summary
The Wastewater Operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City of Nappanee’s wastewater treatment plant to ensure the safe, efficient, and economical treatment of wastewater. This position will execute the policies and assignments received from management, the Lead Operator, and/or compliance requirements defined by state and federal regulatory agencies.
Responsibilities
- Under general supervision, operates a wastewater treatment plant consisting of comminutors, bar screens, lift stations, primary and secondary settling, chlorination, dichlorination, sludge digestion and aeration; operates pumps and valves to move sewage through various treatment processes and adjusts flow patterns; monitors and inspects plant and equipment for proper operation and makes necessary repairs (e.g., monitors master control panel, temperature gauges, flow meters, motors, pumps, chlorine use, etc.); pumps sludge from aerobic digester and hauls to sludge drying beds and fields.
- Monitors water quality of plant effluent and receiving stream by drawing water samples and performing laboratory tests (e.g., suspended solids, BOD, phosphate, dissolved oxygen, pH, etc.); records water quality and other data and assists with preparing required reports for submittal to state agencies; consults with Foreperson regarding necessary treatment adjustments, equipment maintenance, and repair and plant functions.
- Performs cleaning and maintenance of plant, equipment, and lift stations; performs maintenance and repairs on combined sewer overflows; maintains maintenance and repair records; cleans screening devices; skims and cleans settling tanks; assists in performing maintenance and repair of pumps (e.g., lubrication, replacing water seals, pump rebuilding, and removal and replacement); performs weekend duties as required.
- Maintains the cleanliness of the laboratory and laboratory equipment; mows grass around plant grounds; assists in the delivery of shut-off notices, shut-offs, snow plowing, water leak repair; assists other departments as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.

License and Certification Requirements
- Must hold a valid Indiana driver’s license
- Valid CDL License or willingness and ability to obtain CDL
- A valid Class I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s License or willingness and ability to obtain certification within 5 years of hire– Willing to train the right candidate!
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required
- Technical training in Wastewater treatment preferred
- Experience in treatment plant operations preferred
- Experience in mechanical maintenance preferred
- Experience in performing laboratory tests preferred

- This position reports to the Wastewater Supervisor

Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds multiple times during a shift.
- The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The vision abilities required to perform this job include close vision.
Equipment Operated
Light trucks, pumps, a vac-truck, mowing equipment, laboratory equipment, hand and power tools, and a small motorized end loader.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $19.45 - $23.42 per hour
