Position Summary

The principal function of an employee in this class is to teach principles and practices using the most appropriate, practical, and productive methods to effectively help children learn sufficiently to proceed into an education program beyond pre-school. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but substantial leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other Recreation Center staff, clientele, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a classroom environment.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and implements immediate and long-range course goals and prepares and maintains a written plan of instruction to meet short and long-term goals.
  • Uses a variety of teaching techniques and adopts/adapts new materials, methodologies, and innovations to meet the need of individual children and each class as a whole.
  • Reviews program material in the area of specialty and follows a continuous program of curriculum improvement.
  • Creates and maintains an environment conducive to learning.
  • Develops a rapport with children to secure a positive learning environment.
  • Fosters the development of self-discipline among students.
  • Maintains an open channel of communication with parents; consults with parents concerning each child's intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development.
  • Seeks to enrich the classroom environment through the use of community resources.
  • Seeks to understand and appreciate the uniqueness of the community.
  • Seeks new ideas for positive change.
  • Develops and implements evaluative procedures for assessing children's progress, devises valid instruments for measuring children's progress and achievement, and evaluates and records student progress.
  • Coordinates special class activities, such as planning programs and field trips.
  • Knows, and in a calm manner applies, procedures for dealing with crises.
  • Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned.
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.

Required Education, Experience, & License/Certifications

  • High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED); Required.
  • Bachelor's Degree (four-year college or technical school); Preferred; Associate degree Required, Field of Study: Early Childhood Education/Teaching; Or Comparable Education and Experience.
  • Experience: 1 plus year of experience in Early Childhood Education/Teaching. And/or any combination of education and experience, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Certifications & Licenses: CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Other Requirements: Specified positions may require a security background check and/or additional Certification(s) specific to the functional area of assignment; may require state and/or local certification as a teacher.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Substantial knowledge of childhood development and the developmental stages of young children.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of state and local laws concerning teaching minors.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, including children, parents, and peers, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language, and deal with a wide range of persons, including situations in which individuals may be upset over some issue involved with City activities and policies.
  • Ability to prepare and present thorough and sometimes innovative classroom lessons and related activities sufficient for children to learn at a suitable level during the year.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to create reports and correspondence and complete a range of involved forms in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal effectively with a variety of intangible variables in situations involving a wide range of children's personalities and behaviors.
  • Ability to organize and maintain accurate records and files.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions, use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions, and prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations.
  • Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks and the ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
  • Integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

The principal duties of this class are performed in a classroom environment.
