JOB SUMMARY


The purpose of this position is to perform skilled/professional work to implement tennis instruction and training for children, adults, and seniors with varying skill levels. This position will also assist with daily operations in the tennis pro shop.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Supervises and directs assigned part-time staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, and monitoring employee performance; assigns workloads and establishes work schedules for part-time staff to ensure all shifts are covered; provides training to new and existing employees.

  • Implements and directs tennis instruction, programs and activities to include USTA tournaments, camps, private lessons, group lessons and other programming for children, youth and adults; schedules lessons and activities; schedules facilities and grounds use; oversees and directs instructors and volunteers; provides information and direction; instructs classes and/or coaches sports teams; processes participant registrations; ensures all memberships are up to date; creates weekly court sheets in accordance with City programming, high school practices/matches, USTA leagues, and ball machine usage.

  • Performs general customer service and administrative duties; greets and assists customers; receives and responds to inquiries, concerns and complaints of citizens regarding division programs, policies and/or personnel; conducts tours; attends meetings; answers the telephone; prepares reports and correspondence; copies and files documents; enters computer data; enters and collects appropriate registrations and fees

  • Promotes tennis programming and events; creates promotional materials to increase public awareness of and participation in tennis programming; prepares calendars, schedules, flyers, brochures, posters, signs, etc.

  • Maintains inventories of supplies, forms, and equipment; ensures availability of adequate supplies to complete work activities; receives/distributes incoming supply shipments.

  • Ensures racquets are strung in accordance to USRSA standards; assists with maintaining stringing machine

  • Maintains facilities; opens and closes facilities; ensures cleanliness of facilities; arranges facilities and equipment according to daily schedules, programs, and projects; moves, sets up, and tears down equipment as needed; assists with windscreen maintenance; inspects equipment for proper and safe operating condition; reports problems or needed repairs to appropriate personnel.

  • Organizes and facilitates monthly, quarterly, and/or annual special events, tournaments or other activities; creates games and contests; creates schedules and promotional materials; secures officials; oversees events; provides directions and instructions; gathers and sends registration forms, scores, competition forms and birth certificates to national headquarters for regional competitions; maintains related documentation.

  • Makes recommendations for budget requests for tennis programs; monitors adherence to established budgetary parameters.

  • Ensures departmental compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, schedules, logs, registration forms, attendance sheets, class rosters, incident reports, progress reports, community service evaluations, handbooks, or other documents.

  • Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, class rosters and attendance records, activity reports, incident reports, participant registrations, financial documentation, policies, procedures, catalogs, manuals, rules or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.

  • Communicates with supervisor, City employees, volunteers, community sponsors, County officials, instructors, vendors, the general public, or other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice/direction.

  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, codes, regulations; maintains an awareness of new issues, methods, equipment, trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; participates in continuing education activities; attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
  • Operates a personal computer, sports equipment, City vehicle, cash register, public address system, wet vacuum, stop watch, pressure washer, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists with and participates in City-wide events
  • Performs other related duties as required, requested and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree preferred; high school diploma or GED required. Collegiate tennis experience required; Two (2) years experience in tennis instruction.

Licenses or Certifications:

Must have completed the USRSA 16-hour training course. Must possess and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications. Must possess or obtain at least 2 of the following certifications within 6 months of hire (PTR, USPTA, USTA Coaching).

  • Skill in performing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; calculating decimals, percentages, and fractions; and interpreting graphs.

  • Ability to establish rapport.
  • Ability to listen.
  • Ability to officiate at tennis events.
  • Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data.
  • Ability to act as a first-line supervisor, including instructing, reviewing work, maintaining standards, and coordinating activities.
  • Ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
  • Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is medium work. The employee is frequently required to apply 30 pounds of force to move objects. The employee is occasionally required to exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally requires: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing voices and distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken word and shouting to be heard above ambient noise, visual acuity in data/color/observations/operating equipment/inspect defects or measurements, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work may be performed indoors or outdoors where essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as wetness, humidity, temperature extremes, machinery, electric currents, or traffic hazards. Work is performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands.
