Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Lead, performs work of a general custodial nature and a variety of light maintenance tasks of City buildings and facilities.Examples of Work Performed (* denotes an Essential Job Function):
• Sweep; mop; shampoo and vacuums rugs, carpets and floors (*)
• Collect and dispose of waste and litter (*)
• Wash walls, floors and windows (*)
• Strip, wax and buffs floors (*)
• Clean restrooms, offices, conference rooms, and other assigned facilities (*)
• Orders and maintains custodial supplies and equipment (*)
• Dust and polish furniture (*)
• Performs minor maintenance including changing light bulbs and related fixtures, unclogging toilets, changing filters, and any other minor maintenance as needed. (*)
• May set-up and take down furniture for rental groups (*)
• Inspect and maintain assigned custodial equipment including carpet extractor, auto-scrubber, vacuum, and small tools for proper operating condition (*)
• Report needed repairs, safety hazards, or other conditions that could affect the health, safety or security of staff or the public. (*)
• Respond to requests for emergency or unscheduled service. (*)
• Maintain all Hazard Communication/Globally Harmonized Systems for City buildings (*)
• Ability to work independently without on-site supervision (*)
• Plan and organize work to meet required deadlines with a minimum amount of supervision. (*)
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle to travel between city facilities. (*)
• Maintain regular attendance as scheduled (*)
• Maintain complete training and maintain qualifications as necessary (*)
• Perform other duties as assigned (*)
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of custodial methods, materials, supplies, and equipment, including environmental alternatives.
• Knowledge of operation of various custodial equipment and machinery.
• Knowledge of janitorial chemicals and their proper application and safe use.
• Knowledge of proper methods of cleaning floors, carpets, walls, windows, and other areas.
• Skilled in the use of electric buffers, vacuum machines, polishers, hand tools, and equipment used in custodial work.
• Ability to properly clean City buildings and facilities as assigned.
• Ability to select the correct cleaning agents for walls, floors, carpets, and other areas to be cleaned and maintained.
• Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
• Ability to read, write and speak the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
• Ability to solve problems independently or with little guidance.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit and is constantly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; constantly talk or hear; ability to see near and far distances; frequently require to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms; bend at waist, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The work is performed indoors in various environments, and outdoors in all types of weather. The employee is exposed to a variety of potential hazards associated with working with or around chemicals, toxic odors, dust, maintenance equipment, and ladders.
Employees are subject to call out at any time for emergency conditions.
Duties require light, moderate and strenuous physical activity and manual labor including regularly lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs.Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
• High School diploma or equivalent
Experience:
• One or more years' experience is custodial field; or
• Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the job
Licenses and Certifications
• Washington State Driver License and a driving record acceptable to the City
• Must pass a background check
