Pay: $23.80 Per Hour With CDL/$19.04 Per Hour Without CDL

Position Summary

Under the administrative direction of the Department Head to which assigned, performs labor related to all aspects of the construction, repair, and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, storm and sanitary sewers, water mains, alleys, and right-of-ways, all aspects of grounds and building maintenance, safety, and security.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Mowing, trimming, and removal of grass, weeds, bushes, trees, limbs, evergreens, etc.
  • Cleaning, clearing, rip-rapping, and opening of ditches and/or catch basins.
  • Weeding of flowerbeds and landscaping; planting, watering, pruning, mulching, etc.
  • Paving/oil and chipping/patching of streets and alleys.
  • Snow removal and salt spreading of streets, parking lots, and sidewalks.
  • Construction, repair, demolition, and reconstruction of curb and guttering, sidewalks, and catch basins.
  • Installation, construction, or repair of street signs, signposts, fences, gates, picnic tables, benches, playgrounds, and office equipment.
  • Assembly, repair, and setting up of temporary and permanent barricades, temporary traffic control signs, and warnings.
  • Installation, construction, and repair of box culverts, storm and sanitary sewer mains, and water mains.
  • Truck driving.
  • Hauling of dirt, rock, black top, debris, and other materials.
  • Painting
  • Inspection of vehicles and equipment, and reporting of mechanical problems.
  • Maintenance and repair of mowing equipment.
  • Cleaning, organizing, and proper care of tools and equipment.
  • Cleaning, setting up, opening, and closing of municipal buildings, community buildings, and recreational sites. Securing recreational facilities and enforcing rules and ordinances.
  • Cleaning, repairing, and painting of City Park Pool, pool facilities, and equipment.
  • Cleaning, maintenance, and repairing of restrooms and water fountains.
  • Ball field preparation: reconditioning, dragging, and lining.
  • Maintenance, janitorial duties, and repair of City-owned or leased structures, including painting, roofing, plaster repair, light plumbing, and light electrical work.
  • Operates City Hall boiler.
  • Assists clerical staff in manual labor activities such as loading, moving, or storing supplies and files.
  • Changing bulbs in traffic signals, City-owned or leased structures, and recreational facilities.
  • Picking up and disposing of garbage, litter, debris, and other materials.
  • Posting and cleaning of outdoor shelters.
  • Other assigned and related duties.

Qualifications

Education

  • Ability to pass basic reading, writing, and mathematics exams.

Required Skills

  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Illinois Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
  • Demonstrated ability in the basic skills of carpentry, electrical, welding, plumbing, janitorial, and mechanics.
  • Ability to obtain ‘Flagging Certificate’, ‘Traffic Signal Repair Certificate’, and ‘Mosquito Abatement Certificate’.
  • Ability to operate and use various construction tools and equipment, air hammer, sewer jet wash, tiller, jackhammer, shovel, etc.
  • Ability to operate and use various building maintenance tools and equipment common to janitorial, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently, and problem solve without direct and constant supervision.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the general public and fellow employees.

Work Schedule

Laborers are scheduled to work 8-hour days, 40 hours per week. A typical working shift is 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some laborer positions require evening work and/or weekend shifts.

Physical Requirements

  • Move heavy objects (80 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).
  • Move light objects (less than 80 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet).
  • Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time (i.e., picks up trash from the roadside, works under equipment).
  • Lift arms above shoulder level, holding objects (50 pounds or more) (i.e., throws bags and loose trash into a truck, enters the cab of a vehicle).
  • Moves shoulders and arms in circular and sideways motion (i.e., laying concrete and operating heavy equipment).
  • Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
  • Climb up and down ladders or steps.
  • Enter the cab of a vehicle that is 5.5 feet off the ground.
  • Ability to work around chlorine products utilizing protective equipment.
  • Ability to stand, sit, reach, grasp, lift/carry, walk, climb, kneel, squat/bend, and push/pull.
  • Use written sources of information, e.g., read reports, procedural documentation, and reference materials.
  • Perform detailed work requiring visual acuity, e.g., repair electronic equipment.
  • Use non-verbal auditory sources of information, e.g., alarms, beepers, pagers.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.

Residency Requirements

All applicants shall reside in Jefferson County.
