Distinguishing Features of Work:

Under the direction of the Parks Department, the Parks and Recreation Program Assistant performs various tasks related to parks and recreational activities. The position requires exceptional customer service and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Hours of Work and Pay:

  • The part-time position works as scheduled by the Parks Director.
  • HourlyPay$17.00
  • Part- Time position will require a flexible schedule, Monday through Sunday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional evening and weekend hours as needed.
  • Total hours shall not exceed 1,000 hours annually.

Illustrative Examples of Work:

  • Assist with the implementation of recreational activities, including athletics, special events, early childhood programs, community programs, outdoor recreation, fitness/wellness, open gym, and other program areas.
  • Assist with participant supervision, enforces program rules and policies, and provide instruction as needed.
  • Offer high-quality customer service to all patrons of the Parks Department.
  • Assist with organizing and preparing activity supplies, performing set-up and break-down duties, and other activity-related items.
  • Ensure all equipment is accounted for and returned to its proper storage location.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Parks Director.

Skills Required:

  • Valid Illinois Driver's License.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems without constant supervision, and prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and fellow employees.
  • Ability to work varying shifts depending on the programmatic needs of the department.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work assignments and work in diverse environmental conditions.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of experience working with the general public, managing public facilities, or assisting with special events, or an appropriate combination of related work experience.
  • Ability to pass a basic reading, writing, and mathematics exam.

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional walking, reaching, bending, and lifting or carrying object under 50 pounds
  • Requires the ability to be exposed to outside weather conditions for extended periods of time
  • Use written sources of information, e.g. reading reports, procedural documentation, reference

materials

  • Perform detailed work requiring visual acuity
  • Use non-verbal auditory sources of information, e.g., alarms & cell phones
  • Use oral communication to perform work, e.g. answer telephone, receive visitors

Residency Requirement:

  • The City of Mt. Vernon has established the following residency requirements for all employees. All employees shall reside in either Jefferson County, or a County adjacent to Jefferson County, including any of the following: Marion, Wayne, Hamilton, Franklin, Perry, or Washington, as their principal place of residence, at all times during the time of their employment by the City. Certain Mt. Vernon, Illinois employees are authorized by either their job duties, their supervisor, or Mt. Vernon Revised Code, to drive take home vehicles. Nothing in this Section 10 shall be interpreted as allowing take home vehicles for any M t. Vernon City Employee residing outside of Jefferson County, regardless of the nature and scope of their position or employment by the City.”
