PUMP TECHNICIAN
PAY GRADE: 52
PAY RANGE: $40,805.00 - $55,495.00
FLSA STATUS: Non- Exempt
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Performs operational and maintenance activities associated with sanitary sewer lift stations and water pump stations; performs related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
An employee in this class will work under the direction of the Field Operations Manager or Pump Specialist. Employees in this classification will monitor, operate and maintain all of the City's sanitary sewer lift stations and water pump stations on a daily basis.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Performs daily operation and maintenance of all components of water and wastewater pump stations including valves, controls, air compressors and standby generator equipment and performs minor repairs;
- Performs preventative and maintenance duties on all water and wastewater pumps and equipment;
- Reports operating problems to supervisor or other appropriate parties;
- Performs regular visual inspections and/or tests of all water and wastewater pump station machinery, controls, alarms and equipment;
- Talces periodic readings of gauges, meters and charts and records results in operating log books;
- Performs a variety of manual tasks requiring the handling of equipment exposed to raw sewage, cleans sewer pump station wet wells and maintains the structure and grounds of facilities;
- Adapts and adjusts operational infrastructure as needed due to unforeseen situations; Adheres to and enforces stated safety policies and procedures;
- Perform general maintenance activities such as, but not limited to, electrical, pump maintenance, equipment controls, minor plumbing and building maintenance;
- Performs equipment checks to assure that tools are in proper working order; Records readings from meters and instruments
- Checks functioning of equipment;
- Cleans and services pumps, motors and other equipment; Performs other assigned duties as required.
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:
This position involves heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to visually inspect and assemble small parts involved in the operation of machines and determine if small defects are present and use measuring devices. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; subject to hazards including work in high places, exposure to working mechanical parts, electrical currents, and exposure to chemicals; and subject to extreme heat and cold, noise and vibrations, and working in narrow or close quarters. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in semi-skilled trades work; working knowledge of the standard practices, material, tools, and equipment utilized in water and sewer construction and repair; working knowledge of standard hand tools, operation oflight equipment, and materials used in assigned work; working knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work; working knowledge water chemistry and hydraulics, pumping, electricity, carpentry, plumbing, and masonry; ability to work cooperatively as a team member and respond courteously to citizens; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Graduation from high school or GED and some experience in trades related to water and sewer construction; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
ADDITIONALL REQUIREMENT:
Must pass background check. Employee must have the ability to operate a motor vehicle. Employee will be required to maintain a valid operator's license. Working knowledge of sanitary sewer lift stations and water pumping stations is preferred. This position could require after hours call-back to handle emergency situations within the Utilities Department.
