The City of Montpelier is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join our Finance team. This position plays a central role in maintaining the city's financial integrity — from managing the annual audit process to overseeing daily accounting operations and ensuring accurate, transparent financial records.
Key Responsibilities
- Annual audit & fiscal year-end
- Coordinate and manage the annual audit, including year-end transactions, reconciliations, and schedules.
- Banking & reconciliation
- Record ACH bank transactions and reconcile all bank accounts monthly.
- Grants & debt tracking
- Track all grants, debt, and related expenditures; compile and submit related requisitions.
- Daily accounting operations
- Oversee daily accounting functions and ongoing maintenance of the city's financial records.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience, with knowledge of Government and/or Fund Accounting
- Experience in Payroll, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, General Ledger, and general office operations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, and experience with accounting software
- Strong independent judgment, decision-making skills, and ability to work with the public and outside agencies
- Experience with annual municipal audits (preferred)
Benefits & Compensation
- $80,000 – $90,000 annually, based on qualifications
