    DESCRIPTION

    BENEFITS

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Performs intermediate semiskilled work operating a variety of medium to heavy equipment to support operations at water and wastewater treatment facilities. Responsibilities include grounds maintenance, minor equipment servicing, and assisting with general facility maintenance tasks. Related duties are performed as required under moderate supervision.

This is heavy work requiring exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly. Work involves climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required to exchange information; hearing is required to perceive spoken instruction. Visual acuity is necessary for depth and color perception, peripheral vision, use of measuring devices, machine operation, and general observations. Work will be performed primarily outdoors and may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, chemicals and environmental conditions typical of water and wastewater treatment facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

Operating lawn mower bush hog, backhoe, tractor, loader, mini excavator, dump truck, skid steer, and related motorized equipment; performing general maintenance work.
Operates a backhoe to load materials such as sand, rock, biosolids.
Uses a small crane to assist with pulling pumps, aerators, and other equipment.
Operates grading equipment to spread and level fill spoils areas.
Performs landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks, including mowing, trimming, edging, weeding, pressure washing, and painting at both the water and wastewater treatment facilities.
Operates equipment near underground utilities and in other tight areas.
Conducts routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
Cleans and washes equipment on a regular basis.
Reports unsafe conditions, needed repairs, or equipment malfunctions to supervisors or mechanics.
Assists with snow removal and ice control at plant sites as needed.
Assists as needed with biosolids processing at both water and wastewater facilities.
Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and limitations of construction and landscaping. Understanding of occupational hazards and proper safety precautions for equipment operation. Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment use. Skill in operating assigned equipment safely and efficiently. Ability to detect signs of mechanical failure or unsafe conditions. Ability to follow oral instructions and work independently or as part of a team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in the performing heavy manual labor and operating motorized equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a CDL valid in the State of North Carolina or the ability to obtain within six months (6) of employment. The City of Monroe will pay for selected candidate to attend a local CDL school during the six-month probationary period.
