How You’ll Contribute
As a Mechanic I, you’ll play a key part in keeping the City’s diverse fleet safe, reliable, and ready to serve the community by diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of vehicles and equipment—from passenger cars and police units to heavy-duty and specialized apparatus. You’ll perform preventative maintenance and inspections, support more complex repairs alongside senior mechanics, respond to road calls, and ensure accurate documentation of all work in the fleet management system. Through your attention to safety, willingness to learn, and commitment to clear communication, you’ll help maximize fleet uptime, support essential City services, and contribute to a collaborative, high-performing Fleet Services operation.

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and drivability issues across a wide range of City vehicles and equipment, including light, medium, and heavy-duty units
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on gasoline, diesel, CNG, hybrid, electric, and propane-powered vehicles in accordance with manufacturer recommendations
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment to identify worn, defective, or improperly adjusted components and complete necessary repairs or replacements
  • Assist senior mechanics with advanced diagnostics, complex repairs, and specialized equipment installations and conversions
  • Operate shop tools, heavy equipment, and computerized diagnostic software to support accurate and efficient repairs
  • Respond to road calls and perform on-site diagnostics, repairs, and test drives to safely return vehicles to service
  • Conduct scheduled inspections and preventative maintenance related to fueling systems and associated equipment
  • Maintain detailed and accurate repair records, work orders, parts usage, and recommendations within the fleet management system
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors and coworkers across shifts regarding repair status, findings, and service needs
  • Participate in training and continuing education to expand technical skills and stay current with evolving vehicle technologies
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment while following all safety procedures and standards

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of standard practices, tools, materials, and safety procedures used in the maintenance and repair of light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment
  • Skill in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and drivability issues across a variety of fuel and power systems
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, technical manuals, and manufacturer service information
  • Proficiency in using hand and power tools, shop equipment, and computerized diagnostic and fleet management software
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on assigned repairs while knowing when to seek guidance
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, coworkers, and other departments regarding repair findings and status
  • Commitment to workplace safety, organization, and proper handling of tools, equipment, and materials
  • Capacity to learn new technologies, procedures, and equipment through on-the-job training and continuing education
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two years of formal training in automotive or equipment repair
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive, diesel, or heavy equipment systems
  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered
  • Experience working with a variety of vehicle types, including light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment, is preferred
  • Familiarity with computerized diagnostic tools and fleet management software is desirable
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (CDL Class B) with air brakes endorsement, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire with City assistance
  • State of Illinois DOT Truck Certified Safety Tester, or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire

While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to talk or hear; frequently required to walk, stand, sit, use hands and fingers to handle, feel and make fine adjustments, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and rarely lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently exposed to dust, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock; and occasionally exposed to wet, humid, cold, and varied weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
