Part-Time Library Assistant

Position Summary

The Mitchellville Public Library is seeking a customer-focused, organized, and enthusiastic individual to serve as a Part-Time Library Assistant. This position averages 20 hours per week and plays an important role in providing excellent service to library patrons of all ages. The successful candidate will assist with circulation services, children's programming, collection maintenance, technology support, and general library operations while fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Patron Services

  • Provide courteous and professional assistance to patrons in locating materials and accessing library resources.
  • Assist patrons with casual reading selections, research, digital resources, and general information requests in accordance with library policies.
  • Offer reader's advisory and reference assistance within reasonable limitations.
  • Promote a positive and inclusive environment for patrons of all ages and abilities.

Circulation Services

  • Check library materials in and out and maintain accurate circulation records.
  • Issue library cards and update patron accounts.
  • Process holds, interlibrary loan requests, fines, fees, and reimbursements for lost materials.
  • Maintain patron traffic and circulation statistics.
  • Enforce library policies and procedures consistently and professionally.

Collection Management

  • Shelve, organize, shift, and maintain library materials and stacks.
  • Repair damaged materials as needed.
  • Assist with processing, cataloging, and tracking new materials.
  • Maintain the online catalog database.
  • Participate in weeding and collection maintenance projects.

Children's Services and Programming

  • Help plan, coordinate, and conduct Story Hour and other children's programming.
  • Assist with special events, workshops, book fairs, and library activities.
  • Prepare bulletin boards, displays, posters, and children's area decorations.
  • Work effectively with children of all abilities and create an engaging, inclusive learning environment.

Technology and Administrative Support

  • Assist patrons with public access computers, printers, scanners, and digital resources.
  • Utilize library software and automated systems, including circulation and catalog systems.
  • Use office computer applications, library databases, digital library platforms, social media, and website management tools.
  • Troubleshoot basic office equipment issues, including copiers and printers.
  • Respond to emails, maintain records, prepare reports, and assist with public communications.
  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions, workshops, and continuing education opportunities.

General Library Operations

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized library environment.
  • Keep the circulation desk organized and functional.
  • Assist with policy enforcement and daily operational needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support library services and programs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to work all hours of library operation, including evenings and weekends.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with children, families, coworkers, and the public.
  • Ability to follow library policies, procedures, and confidentiality standards.
  • Experience using computers, databases, internet resources, and office software.
  • Ability to operate office equipment including computers, copiers, printers, and fax machines, or willingness to learn.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a library, educational setting, or with children.
  • Knowledge of digital library resources and online catalog systems.
  • High School Diploma or GED.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry books and library materials.
  • Ability to push book carts and move materials throughout the library.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform shelving tasks for extended periods.
  • Ability to count change and handle money accurately.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patrons, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Working knowledge of library circulation functions, including check-in/check-out procedures, patron registration, holds, fines, and fees.
  • Ability to maintain working knowledge of library trends and best practices through continuing education.
  • Strong attention to detail and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities in a public service environment.

Hours and Pay: Part-Time, averaging 20 hours per week. $15 an hour.

Pay: $14.00 - $15.00 per hour
