The City of Missouri City, known as the “Show Me City,” is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health Inspector to join its Neighborhood Services Department, Health Services Division.

This is a full-time supervisory position responsible for overseeing and coordinating inspections of public establishments to ensure compliance with applicable public health laws, regulations, and City ordinances. The position plays an important role in protecting the health and safety of the community by promoting compliance, identifying potential health risks, and supporting effective public health practices.

The Health Inspector provides leadership, guidance, and support to Health Services staff and coordinates inspection activities to ensure services are delivered efficiently, consistently, and in accordance with established standards and regulations. The position also works collaboratively with businesses, residents, City departments, and other stakeholders to address public health concerns and promote a safe and healthy community. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to interpret and apply public health laws, regulations, and City ordinances.


Reports To: Neighborhood Services Director

• Schedules and conducts inspections to ensure compliance with City Codes and Ordinances; documents discrepancies and violations; prepares reports; communicates inspection results; and conducts follow-up inspections as necessary;


• Assists business owners with implementing and maintaining food safety standards and practices to safeguard public health; develops quality assurance programs for business operations as needed;


• Recommends measures to protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, materials, and conditions;

• Develops and implements environmental health and safety programs, policies, and training programs as needed;


• Effectively and promptly responds to, investigates, and resolves complaints, problems, and inquiries related to the Food Inspection Program;


• Performs administrative duties, including responding to phone calls and emails; copying and faxing information; entering inspection information into the computer system; compiling reports; and maintaining accurate files and records;


• Investigates reports of code violations; prepares code violation notices, letters, and citations as needed; documents violations; communicates case status with citizens; and testifies in court when required;


• Provides training, guidance, and support to other Health Inspectors regarding daily responsibilities, inspection procedures, and field operations;


• Supervises Health Inspector I, II, and III staff, including providing direction, oversight, and performance guidance;


• Performs other related duties as assigned;

• Associate’s degree in Health Management, Education, Business, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university required;

• Minimum of four (4) years of professional experience as a Health Inspector or in a closely related occupation required;

• Registered Sanitarian (RS), Sanitarian-in-Training (SIT), or completion of the FDA Voluntary National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards’ basic curriculum and field training elements required.
