Job Description
The firefighter position protects life and property by performing effective rescue and firefighting skills. Performs related emergency scene duties, equipment and facility maintenance and fire prevention and education duties, as assigned.
Duties/Responsibilities
Essential Job Duties:
- Responds to emergency calls to provide fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials and emergency medical assistance to the public.
- Responds to emergency incidents, which involves getting to the scene quickly and safely, with the proper protective equipment.
- Rescues individuals from fires and other emergency situations.
- Contains and extinguishes fires, places hose lines and ladders, directs and operates nozzles and ventilates structures. This may involve working inside, outside and on top of burning and/or smoke filled structures.
- Performs salvage and overhaul operations which may include placing salvage covers, removing excess water, opening walls and ceilings, removal of debris and covering openings in a structure.
- Renders emergency medical treatment commensurate to their level of training and certification to injured or ill victims.
- Operates fire department apparatus and equipment in accordance with fire department protocol and with due care for the safety of personnel, citizenry and property.
- Assists at hazardous materials and technical rescue incidents to a level commensurate to their training.
- Prepares, inspects and cleans equipment to ensure its proper functioning.
- Maintains and improves rescue and firefighting knowledge and skills. Attends internal and external training and maintains familiarity with fire department protocols, equipment operating procedures and the city street system.
- Maintains facilities and performs housekeeping duties as directed.
- Works duty crew shifts, drills, meetings and other details as assigned.
- When no officer is available, he/she may be called upon to supervise other firefighters.
- Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- A belief in and commitment to the organization's shared values.
- Possesses a valid driver's license.
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Primary residence is a 15-minute maximum drive time from a Minnetonka fire station.
- Current state firefighter I certification.
- Current state firefighter II certification.
- Current state certified emergency medical technician.
- Current certified first responder.
- Current certified paramedic.
- Prior firefighting and/or EMS experience in the last 2 years
Additional Information
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Firefighting principles, policies and practices.
- Knowledge of current programs and practices concerning firefighter training and safety.
- Knowledge of current emergency medical services and hazardous materials response practices.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Starting pay is $18.92*
- (*Hourly wage includes $3.70 city contribution to 457b deferred compensation account.)
- *Pay increases to $20.51* per hour after successful completion of probationary period, commonly 12 to 18 months after completion of academy.
- Retirement Pension: After completing 10 years of service to vest, and up to 30 years of service, employees receive a lump-sum calculated at $15,000 per year served, payable upon retirement and/or at 50 years of age or older.

Minimum Requirements Once Hired:
- Respond to 25% of all fire callbacks in the paid-on-call employee’s assigned station area, per calendar year, except when on approved Leave of Absence
- Attend 75% of scheduled drills per calendar quarter, except when on approved Leave of Absence
- Attend 100% of all required drills (generally Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning)
- A minimum of 5 duty crew shifts per month
- Maintain a primary residence at a 15-minute maximum drive time from a Minnetonka fire station.
- To maintain minimum standards, approximately 25 to 30 hours per month minimum are required by employee.
