The City of Millville is seeking a skilled, dependable Mechanic to maintain, diagnose, repair, and service the City's motor vehicles and motorized equipment. The successful candidate will be safety-minded, organized, and capable of working on gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles, construction equipment, and related mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, steering, suspension, and braking systems.

What You'll Do

·Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fuel, ignition, emissions, steering, suspension, brake, transmission, and engine problems using appropriate testing and diagnostic equipment.

·Maintain, service, repair, overhaul, and rebuild automobiles, trucks, construction equipment, and other motorized equipment used in municipal operations.

·Remove, inspect, repair, replace, align, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, brakes, steering and suspension systems, pumps, electrical components, and related parts.

·Perform preventive maintenance and make repairs in accordance with manufacturer specifications, technical manuals, diagrams, schematics, and established procedures.

·Use hand tools, power tools, lifts, hoists, welding equipment, meters, gauges, analyzers, and other shop equipment safely and properly.

·Respond to disabled City vehicles or equipment at various locations and make appropriate adjustments or repairs.

·Maintain accurate service records, work orders, parts information, equipment files, and electronic or manual maintenance records.

·Safeguard tools, equipment, materials, and supplies and maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work area.

·Provide guidance to mechanic helpers or other assigned staff when directed and perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications (set by NJ Civil Service) : Only applicants that meet the minimum qualifications will be considered.

·Training Required: Successful completion of one (1) year of automotive technology training at an accredited community college or vocational school.

·Experience Required: Two (2) years of experience maintaining and repairing motor vehicles and/or construction equipment such as trucks, bulldozers, tractors, cranes, road graders, power shovels, or similar equipment.

·Training substitution: Applicants who do not possess the required year of formal training may substitute one (1) additional year of qualifying experience.

·ASE substitution: An ASE certification in A-1 Engine Repair, A-6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, or A-8 Engine Performance may substitute for the formal training requirement.

·Driver's license: Must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.

Strongly Preferred Qualifications

·Completion of Ford Automotive Student Service Educational Training (ASSET) or the General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (ASEP) is strongly preferred.

·A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with endorsements appropriate to the vehicles operated, is preferred at the time of appointment.

·Hands-on experience servicing mixed municipal, commercial, heavy-duty, diesel, and/or construction-equipment fleets is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications After Hire

The selected employee will be required to obtain and maintain a valid CDL, with any endorsements appropriate to the class and type of vehicle operated. Any required timeframe will be communicated by the City. Depending on assigned duties, the employee may also be required to obtain and maintain applicable certifications or training relating to motor-vehicle air conditioning and refrigeration, diesel emissions inspections, powered industrial trucks, emissions repairs, motor-vehicle inspections, alternate-fuel vehicles, suspension and steering, brake repairs, engine repair, and engine performance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

·Knowledge of automotive and heavy-equipment systems, components, accessories, diagnostic procedures, and repair methods.

·Ability to identify defects and determine the cause and extent of mechanical problems.

·Ability to read and apply technical manuals, specifications, blueprints, diagrams, and schematics.

·Ability to safely disassemble, rebuild, adjust, reassemble, reinstall, and align automotive and equipment components.

·Ability to use diagnostic equipment, precision measuring devices, mechanic's hand tools, and power tools.

·Ability to communicate effectively and maintain accurate electronic and manual records.

Civil Service and Employment Conditions

This position is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service job specification for Mechanic, title code 02434. Appointment and continued employment are subject to all applicable Civil Service requirements, City policies, the Council 18 collective bargaining agreement, and any lawful pre-employment or job-related requirements established by the City. Pay: $38,118.33 - $62,843.73 per year
