What are the responsibilities and job description for the Code Compliance Officer I / Code Compliance Officer Trainee position at City of Mesa?
This recruitment will be used to fill a vacancy at either the Code Compliance Officer Trainee or Code Compliance Officer I level.
CODE COMPLIANCE OFFICER TRAINEE ($50,341.20 - $72,858.24 Annually)
A Code Compliance Officer Trainee is responsible for learning to perform technical field inspections and investigation work in the enforcement of the City's zoning, sign, exterior housing maintenance, and other nuisance and environmental control ordinances. This class is also responsible for performing related duties as required.
This is a trainee class generally working under the direction of a Code Compliance Officer I or II while learning to perform the full scope of duties of a Code Compliance Officer I through on-the-job training and guidance.
The Code Compliance Officer Trainee is distinguished from the Code Compliance Officer I by the latter's ability to carry out the full range of inspection and enforcement duties with minimal supervision or assistance. Employees in this class may progress by noncompetitive promotion to Code Compliance Officer I upon meeting the specific criteria-based promotion requirements of job knowledge, productivity, customer service, job performance, community awareness, and teamwork. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Code Compliance Supervisor who reviews work through conferences, reports, and results achieved. This class is FLSA nonexempt.
CODE COMPLIANCE OFFICER I ($52,852.80 - $76,505.52 Annually)
A Code Compliance Officer I is responsible for performing technical field inspections and investigation work in the enforcement of the City's zoning, sign, exterior housing maintenance, and other nuisance and environmental control ordinances. This position is also responsible for performing related duties as required.
The Code Compliance Officer I is expected to exercise considerable initiative to work independently in the field and is responsible for decisions requiring discretion, judgment, and familiarity with a variety of codes and ordinances. Several circumstances create a working environment which differentiates the Code Compliance Officer's class from other City inspection classes: (1) many of those encountering the Code Compliance Officer I have little or no prior knowledge of the requirements of the City code; (2) the Code Compliance Officer I is often enforcing a portion of the code which states what may be done, not what is specifically prohibited; and (3) the Code Compliance Officer I often must gain cooperation from the citizen in order to acquire concrete evidence that the citizen is not in compliance with the code.
The Code Compliance Officer I is distinguished from the Code Compliance Officer II by the documented ability to carry out the full range of inspection and enforcement duties with little to no supervision or assistance, and by the expectation to typically resolve public relations conflicts with greater sensitivity and/or negotiation skills with little to no supervision or assistance. Employees in this class may progress by noncompetitive promotion to Code Compliance Officer II upon meeting the specific criteria-based promotion requirements of performance, certification, education, and community awareness. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Code Compliance Supervisor who reviews work through conferences, reports, and results achieved. This class is FLSA nonexempt.
