GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Operates a city bus, on a scheduled run, within a unique Demand/Response transportation system; does other related work as deemed necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant will be required to pass a physical examination, including the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulated drug and alcohol screening, administered by the City Health Officer and the City’s collection and test site. These costs are incurred by the City of Merrill.
Applicant must obtain valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver License; CLASS BCD, ENDORSEMENT P. (License not necessary to apply).
WORK SCHEDULE: Regular scheduled hours 9:15am - 5:15am Monday-Friday. Overtime as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THIS CLASS: Our Bus Operator Position has the primary responsibility of operating a 2-way radio equipped city bus in a unique Demand/Response transit system within the City of Merrill. All of the duties performed are in accordance to established practices and knowledge of the Policy and Procedure Manual. The Operator must perform in a consistent, safe, conscious and cordial manner while performing in traffic and servicing the public. Direct supervision is received from the Transit Administrator and Transit Coordinator.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES PERFORMED: A pre-trip inspection will be performed on each assigned bus and recorded on the Daily Maintenance Sheet. Operator must report any and all maintenance needs on the bus. Receives passenger pick-up and delivery work assignments from dispatch. Provides extra care for children, elderly and special needs passengers. Maintains proper discipline when transporting school children. Assists passengers in loading and unloading of groceries and other carry on baggage. Washes the exterior of their bus daily. Cleans the interior of the bus including floor, seats, dashboard and windows by following the Daily Maintenance Sheet. Performs other related services as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of Wisconsin Motor Vehicles rules and regulations applicable to Motor Bus Operation. Ability to work courteously and tactfully with the public; learn the geography of the City of Merrill; safely operate a passenger motor bus; diagnose mechanical defects when operating a passenger motor bus.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Experience in working with the public; operating a passenger motor bus or vehicle used for the transportation of passengers; operation of a 2-way communication radio; thorough familiarity of the City of Merrill streets, landmarks and geographical layout. Completion of a standard high school course, supplemented by bus operating training or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
There is a six (6) month Probationary Performance Period.
