What are the responsibilities and job description for the Grants Specialist position at City of Meriden?

This is a professional administrative position working under the direction of the City Manager in the area of grants originations and application writing.

The employee will be responsible for researching grant opportunities, preparing municipal grant applications, coordinating with municipal departments to assemble the information necessary to complete grant applications, and communicating with representatives of State and Federal funding sources.

Examples of Work:

Research State and Federal grant opportunities via portals, ie. Grants.gov, FEMA GO, various state-specific platforms. Preparing grant applications, including State and Federal opportunities through EPA, HUD, DECD (including Community Investment Fund), Urban Act, and various others. Serves as the point-of-contact for grant origination for all City departments and as a professional liaison between the City and grantor agencies.

Coordinates with departments to identify City funding needs.

Draft persuasive project narratives, develop detailed project budgets, and collect information necessary to supplement grant applications, e.g., Letters of support, past audits, required City resolutions.

Manage and track grant applications and ensure timely submissions.

Communicate with the Finance Department regarding any local funding requirements and with City departments regarding application requirements and status.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of research techniques, grant applications, and the basic principles of administrative organization.

Thorough knowledge of State and Federal municipal grant funding sources or equivalent experience and a background in public sector/non-profit grant origination and application writing.

Ability to carry out the policy directions of the City Manager effectively, promptly and without supervision.

Ability to speak and write effectively in order to release information to the media and the general public and to prepare progress reports for the City Manager, Mayor and City Council. Ability to support the City Finance Department to track and manage grant funded activities using the City financial management system and Microsoft Excel.

Ability to analyze administrative and fiscal problems and to make sound recommendations as to their solution. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, State and Federal officials, and the general public.

Desirable Experience and Training:

Bachelor's Degree required, preferably with a specialty in government, business or public administration or related field. Two (2) to five (5) years of grant origination and application writing, preferably experience in Federal and State grant origination and application writing.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $75,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
