ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Works under the direction of the Library’s Deputy Director to promote the library’s policies, goals, and objectives. Collaborates with library administrators to develop and implement system-wide projects, policies, goals, and objectives. Provides administrative oversight for daily operations in Cataloging, Collection Development, Delivery & Distribution, Material Services, and Virtual Digital roles, including the Digital Projects Manager, Integrated Library System Coordinator, and Virtual/Digital Coordinator. Oversees departmental productivity, staffing, and evaluations while supervising and supporting department managers to promote their growth, development, and performance as well as serving as the hiring manager for assigned areas. Consults with vendors and technical support staff regarding the procurement, installation, configuration, and maintenance of virtual digital and support services. Coordinates development and roll-out of new digital and support services, including coordinating, training, testing and implementation of new technology and enhancements. Monitors activities and effects necessary changes in staff performance, department service patterns, work output, systems efficiency, etc. Serves on the Library’s Infrastructure Team to monitor Support Services facilities and facilitates the preparation of administrative documents, including department procedures and budget reports. Implements data-gathering systems and prepares agency reports as needed, including documentation for personnel activity, departmental procedures, annual reports, statistical reports, and budget reports. Develops innovative services, methods, and procedures to improve operations, ensuring effectiveness, consistency, and alignment with the library’s strategic plan. Keeps abreast current on industry trends by reading professional literature. Attends meetings at various locations, including state and national conferences, and networks with colleagues engaged in similar work. Works in cooperation with public service to maximize system services. Communicates information from meetings and other sources to staff clearly and promptly. Prepares concise written materials, delivers effective presentations, and uses email efficiently as a communication tool. Works with administrative staff to set priorities and determine appropriate processes for implementation of needed improvement through the management structure.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Requires excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated skill in managing multiple priorities as well as emphasis on leadership, team building and making decisions. Requires the ability to operate general office equipment such as telephone, copier, and computer. Requires the ability to push, pull, or lift up to 50lbs.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office environment with occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions. Requires some stooping, bending, stretching, pushing and lifting up to 40 pounds. Requires some travel within Shelby County and occasional travel within the United States. Requires flexible scheduling including nights, weekends and on-call responsibilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in library science from and ALA accredited library school and six (6) years of experience in public service and/or technical service in a large public library with four (4) of the six (6) years in a supervisory capacity. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license as a condition of continued employment. Must be proficient with personal computers and have ability to operate all basic office equipment.
