What are the responsibilities and job description for the Intelligent Traffic System Technician position at City of Memphis Careers?

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the general supervision of the Traffic Signal Maintenance and Construction 
Manager in monitoring, maintaining, and repairing the fiber optic communication network associated with the Intelligent 
Transportation System. Monitors, diagnoses, and repairs equipment and components associated with the Intelligent Transportation 
System (ITS) in house or in the field, as required. Codes, uploads/downloads, and programs traffic signal controller data, and 
software as directed by management. Plans maintenance and repair work schedules for all ITS communication infrastructure, 
devices, cameras, and other related equipment. Configures and troubleshoots ITS communication equipment from various locations. 
Monitors e-mail requests to locate existing signal system infrastructure. Locates and marks existing signal system infrastructure for 
construction activity. Reviews and approval recommendations to management for plans, specifications, and equipment submittal 
packets for future ITS work. Creates, integrates, and prepares signal system reports and other correspondence by utilizing various 
computer applications. Communicates and shares traffic data and system status with various agencies as requested. Retrieves traffic 
data from field devices, as needed. Performs inspection work for the installation of new ITS equipment as needed. Travels to 
various work sites/locations throughout the city for repairs, maintenance, inspection, and examination of ITS equipment. Interacts 
and communicates verbally and in writing with management, staff members, contractors, agencies, and general public on a variety 
of traffic issues and concerns. Provides support to Traffic Management Center (TMC) staff and management personnel as requested.
 

OTHER FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.
 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Requires ability to stand 
for extended periods of time and traverse over uneven surfaces which will involve bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, crouching, 
climbing ladders, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs. or up to 100 lbs. with assistance. Requires the ability to 
perform manual work with basic hand tools in grasping and feeling fiber optic cables, electrical circuits, and various wiring. 
Requires the ability to operate a bucket truck, automobile, and communication devices.
 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Requires some work in a shop/lab setting but mostly outdoor work. May be exposed to 
changing weather conditions, dust, odors, noise, and fumes. Requires the use and wear of protective gear when necessary. Possible 
exposure to high voltages and/or vehicular traffic may be hazardous without using the appropriate safety precautions. Frequently 
travels to various work sites/locations throughout the city for repairs. May be subject to shift work, standby and call out duty. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology, Computer Science or closely related field and 
three (3) years' experience in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), traffic signal maintenance or construction; or any 
combination of experience or training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must possess or obtain within six 
(6) months of hire a valid Class “B” Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver License and maintain as a condition 
of continued employment and comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules. Must 
possess and maintain an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Technician Level I and Work Zone 
Safety certification. Must obtain IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level II certification specialized in Bench, Design, and Field -
Fiber Optics for (ITS) within one (1) year of hire and maintain certification as a condition of continued employment. IMSA Traffic 
Signal Technician Level III certification in the specialized fields listed above preferred.

The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County withing six (6) months from the date of employment.  Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire.
