RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Secures and inspects relevant facilities in order to ensure their continued operation and utility.
  • Maintains municipal streets and roads, removes snow, inspects, and repairs signs, paints lines, trims trees, mows roadways, cuts back roadside brush, performs tree work, sweeps roads, applies blacktop, and performs a variety of street maintenance functions.
  • Maintains stormwater drainage systems by cleaning, repairing, rebuilding, and installing systems.
  • Prepares for and responds to emergencies and seasonal incidents including snow removal, stormwater, flooded areas, construction projects, and repair and maintenance of equipment and machinery.
  • Builds retaining walls, stone walls, head walls, culverts, installing gabions, and performing concrete work on sidewalks and other locations.
  • Paints buildings, cross walk lines, stop lines, and parking lines.
  • Operates motor vehicles and equipment necessary for completion of projects; performs labor incidental to the work of operating equipment or other laboring tasks when required; ensures that all equipment is ready for operation at all times and ensures normal service is performed properly.
  • Checks for the proper use and operation of equipment and vehicles; reports on damage and non-functioning of parts and equipment and may perform minor maintenance.
  • Unloads, loads, and moves materials, equipment, and supplies and may assist in storing and sorting inventory.
  • Participates in professional development to maintain required licensure and certification for the provision of duties and responsibilities.
  • Interacts with co-workers, the public, and external contacts such as contractors or vendors doing business for the City.
  • May perform across functional areas of the Department of Public Works (DPW) on an as-needed basis, including seasonal incidents such as snow removal, snow and stormwater, flooded areas, construction projects, and the repair and maintenance of various equipment.
  • Performs other related job duties as required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 to 3 years of related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license. CDL Class B.
Must be pursued after hire:
  • 2B hoisting license.
Beneficial:
  • 1C/2A/4E/4G OR HEML hoisting license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Working knowledge of materials, methods, and current practices essential to the construction and maintenance of streets and roadways as well as related infrastructure and equipment; terminology, shop, and grounds machinery and a variety of measuring equipment; snow and ice removal techniques and practices and field safety.
  • Strong communication skills, problem-solving skills, and customer service skills. Proficient fine motor and mechanical skills required to operate department hand and power tools and equipment used to carry out the essential functions of the position in a safe and efficient manner. Skilled in the operation of heavy/light motor equipment, construction equipment, and the performing of physical labor.
  • Ability to follow directions; operate specialized equipment such as mowers, seeder/spreader, aerators, trucks, trailers, backhoes, loaders, and certain hoisting equipment; work independently with minimal supervision; interact with the public tactfully and effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with department staff and with contractors doing business with the City as well as state regulatory authorities; carry out essential functions under hazardous or inclement weather conditions in a safe manner.
