Street Maintenance Supervisor

The City of Marquette is accepting applications for a Public Works Street Supervisor.  The hourly wage for this position is $38.86/hr. for the 2025 contract rates and includes an excellent benefit package.  Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.                                           POSITION TITLE: Supervisor, Street Maintenance

JOB SUMMARY:
Supervise a crew in the maintenance and repair of the City’s streets, sidewalks, properties and parking lots. General work schedule and priorities established in informal discussion and at weekly meetings. Independent judgment used in daily scheduling and the handling of emergencies. Confers with the Director of Public Works on issues other than routine.
Exercise direct supervisory responsibility for a crew of workers typically working at separate sites and operating heavy equipment. Position is required to participate in the on-call rotation to provide emergency response to situations arising outside of the regular working hours.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following:
• Supervise a crew in the maintenance and repair of the City’s streets including sidewalks, right-of-way, trees, and signs, as well as parking lots and miscellaneous properties.
• Schedule work crews daily for routine and emergency maintenance and repair, including snow removal.
• Assist in the identification and recording of work needs. Prioritize these with service requests from the public and other departments and keeps appropriate parties informed of work schedules.
• Monitor progress of work by on-site inspections and checking daily work reports.
• Assure conformance to safe work practices, established quality standards, and regulations. Provide related training for staff.
• Assure proper warning signs and protective devices are used around projects to safeguard the general public and minimize municipal liability.
• Coordinate work with other departments, agencies, utilities, and contractors. Obtain required permits and clearances for scheduled work and provide for notice of service interruptions.
• Inspect the work of contractors used to supplement the resources of the Public Works Department.

• Supervise the collection of samples to assure quality and arrange for other quality testing as necessary.
• Conduct inspections and prepare reports on work needed, including estimates of labor, equipment, and material to be used. Arrange for delivery of materials.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of regulations, standards, and maintenance techniques applicable to areas of responsibility.
• Supervise, train, counsel, discipline and evaluate subordinate employees following contract provisions, City policies and good supervisory practices.
• Meet with city residents or contractors to clarify service requests, inform them of City policies and procedures, coordinate work schedules, and resolve disputes about service quality.
• Prepare a variety of reports for the City and other agencies regarding the status and maintenance of assigned portions of the City’s infrastructure systems.
• Perform similar supervisory duties involved in the maintenance of such other portions of the City’s infrastructure as are determined to be the responsibility of the Public Works Department.
• Serve as on-call supervisor in a six-person rotation with other members of the supervisory unit.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Perform other related functions as assigned.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED
• Computer, calculator, tablets, printers, survey level, various size trucks and pieces of heavy equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
• Knowledge of street repair techniques, practices and standards to assure safe and efficient operations.
• Knowledge of and skill in operating heavy equipment in street repair and maintenance.
• Knowledge of safety practices and appropriate signage requirements to protect workers and the general public.
• Skill in organizing, scheduling and directing a work crew.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel and other standard business software.
• Required training includes a high school education. A minimum of five years’ experience in street maintenance preferred.
• A valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements.
• Required Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Storm Water Operator Certification is required within one (1) year of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Frequent standing, sitting, walking and driving.
• Frequent bending, twisting, squatting, climbing, reaching and grappling.
• Lifting 75 lbs maximum without the assistance of another person and, frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
• Must be capable of using hands/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, pulling, and operating controls.
• Ability to communicate orally in a clear manner.
• Ability to distinguish sounds at various frequencies and volumes.
• Ability to distinguish colors.
• Ability to distinguish people and/or objects at varied distances under a variety of light conditions.
• Ability to withstand weather and temperature changes in the work environment.
• Physical strength and dexterity to climb ladders, crawl through pipes, etc. in order to perform inspection duties.
