POSITION TITLE: Social Worker Level 1
REPORTS TO: Senior Services Manager

JOB CLASS CODE: Non-Exempt / City Hall Bargaining Unit
COMPENSATION: The hourly wage is $19.25 -$24.86 per hour dependent on experience and qualifications. POSITION SUMMARY
Manage caseloads of senior citizens with a variety of complex needs. Provide services to meet their social, emotional, financial, and physical needs. Promote and refer to proper community resources as needed.
Work assignments are made by the Licensed Social Work Coordinator, who is consulted on unusual work problems. Routine duties are carried out independently according to established practices and procedures and are periodically checked in process or through conferences and reports.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following:
- Respond to inquiries regarding program services and eligibility for assistance. Provide literature, applications, and follow-up on these requests.
- If the need arises, facilitate support groups and meetings of community agencies.
- Provide staff support for Senior Services Center functions.
- Assess client’s ADLs/IADLs and emotional wellbeing. Maintain cultural sensitivity to the population being served to determine case management needs.
- Provide Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program services by obtaining and maintaining certification.
- Advocate with other community agencies and institutions on behalf of clients.
- Maintain case records including completion of appropriate forms, progress notes and required monthly programmatic reports. File reports in a timely manner to meet required deadlines.
- Review cases periodically with supervisor and Social Work Coordinator.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Performs other related functions as assigned.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED
- Standard office equipment including computers, telephones, and printers/copiers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Four-year college degree in social work.
- Willingness to be trained for licensure and examination for LBSW.
- Must have Limited License Bachelors of Social Work or Apply for Limited License within 90 days of employment
- Employees will hold designation representative title of Caseworker or Senior Center staff until they have obtained Limited License
- Comprehensive knowledge of other agencies, programs and services as provided by both public and private sector community agencies.
- Willingness to become a certified Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program Counselor.
- Proven ability to maintain high client caseloads with multi-disciplinary needs.
- Knowledge of and adherence to the principles and practices of social work for the aging population. 1 or more years of experience preferred but not required.
- Professionally skilled in personal presentation, verbal, and written communication.
- Knowledge of services within the community served as well as nationally available resources and the ability to research situation-specific resources.
- Ability to coordinate and work with governmental, private, civic, religious, business and/or other groups to arrange and coordinate plans.
- Skill in assessing and evaluating client needs to develop effective service plans.
- Skill in compiling data, maintaining records, and preparing reports.
- Highly computer literate and detail-oriented with meticulous organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships with clients, supervisors, co-workers, and other agencies.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients, co-workers, and other agencies.
- License to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Michigan and use of a personal vehicle.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Lifting 20 lbs maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 lbs.
- Frequent sitting.
- Occasional standing, walking, and driving.
- Must be capable of using hand(s)/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, pulling, and operating controls.
