The School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as a vital law enforcement professional dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors within the school environment. Responsibilities
- Maintain a visible presence on school grounds to deter misconduct and promote safety.
- Respond promptly to emergencies, incidents, or threats within the school premises.
- Conduct criminal investigations related to school-related incidents, including theft, vandalism, or other violations.
- Provide first aid and CPR when necessary to assist injured individuals.
- Enforce laws and school policies while respecting students’ rights and fostering positive relationships, and use the TRIAD method during student interactions.
- Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, parents, and community partners to develop safety programs and conflict management strategies.
- Write detailed reports documenting incidents, investigations, and actions taken for record-keeping and legal purposes.
- Engage in community outreach activities to build trust between law enforcement and students.
- Conduct surveillance or security assessments as needed to identify potential risks or vulnerabilities.
- Participate in training sessions related to law enforcement procedures, animal handling (if applicable), immigration law, loss prevention, or other relevant areas.
Skills
- Strong leadership abilities with the capacity to manage conflicts effectively.
- Must either already be certifed as a School Resource Officer, or meet ILETSB requirements to become a ceritfied as a School Resource Officer.
- Proficiency in report writing and documentation of investigations.
- Knowledge of law enforcement practices including criminal investigation techniques and surveillance methods.
- Certification in first aid and CPR; ability to provide emergency medical assistance, or possess ability to be trained in first aid, CPR, Stop the Bleed, and the use of an AED
- Experience in security protocols, loss prevention, or security management preferred.
- Ability to drive safely within the community or school district as required.
- Excellent communication skills for engaging with students, staff, parents, and community members.
- Background in military service or prior law enforcement experience is required.
- Familiarity with animal handling or animal care may be beneficial depending on the school environment.
