I. TITLE: Laborer/Mechanic – Street Department
II. PAY CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
III. REPORTS TO: Street Department Superintendent
IV. NATURE OF WORK: The position of Laborer has a union designation. Compensation for this position is derived from the Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position shall be filled by the Commissioner and Superintendent of the Department with the consent of the City Council. The normal work hours for this position are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Should weather, special projects, or other unforeseen events occur, it may be necessary to work overtime, weekends, or holidays. This position receives job assignments from the Lead Man or Superintendent in accordance with projects currently in progress.
V. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Arrive for each shift on time and appropriately dressed for safe operations.
· Acknowledge and understand that safety is of the utmost importance while performing duties and that items such as Machine Guards and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are mandatory, not optional.
· Effectively and respectfully communicate with Lead Man and/or Superintendent for job assignments and tasks needing performed before beginning the workday.
· Professionally and respectfully communicate with the public, other departments, and employees.
· Operate department equipment and machinery, including but not limited to backhoes, mowers, dump trucks and trimmers as needed and treat said equipment and machinery with respect.
· Schedule and perform proper maintenance on all approved city owned vehicles and equipment in possession of the various city departments as needed.
· Record all maintenance performed as well as future scheduled maintenance.
· Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and lighting systems, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies; repairs and installs hydraulic controls, cooling, fuel, and exhaust systems; tunes engines using standard testing equipment.
· Performs repairs and rebuilding of salt distribution equipment and snowplows.
· Performs general overhaul and repair work on automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, tractors, construction equipment, street sweepers, firefighting equipment, police and other public works vehicles and equipment.
· Performs mechanical repair and adjustment work on firefighting trucks, automotive and auxiliary equipment including water pumps and light plants.
· Fuel vehicles and equipment in shop.
· Utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as safety regulations, work orders, equipment maintenance and repair manuals, diagrams/schematics, engine oil analysis reports and parts manuals.
· Maintain accurate inventory records to assure proper stock is available.
· Transport barricades to job sites when needed.
· Maintain, test, and repair antennas on emergency sirens and generators.
· Repair stop lights and overhead lightening with the use of a bucket truck.
· All other duties as assigned.
VI. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
· High School Degree or equivalent required.
· Must acquire and retain any required licensing as mandated by any federal, state, or local agency.
· Possess a valid driver’s license.
· Prefer an automotive service excellence (ASE) certification.
· Knowledge of operating principles and standards of gasoline and diesel engines.
· Knowledge of hydraulics as it applies to trucks, and construction maintenance equipment.
· Possess experience in the operation of heavy equipment and other machinery.
· Must be able to stand and walk long periods of time, work in inclement weather, including extreme heat or cold, and physically be able to lift 50 pounds.
· Must be proficient with basic computer skills for ordering inventory, equipment, etc.
· Be available should the need arise to work overtime or on weekends and holidays.
· Must be able to complete all pre-employment/post-employment testing including but not limited to drug screening, physical exam, and background check successfully.
