The Position
The City of Maple Grove is seeking Range Safety Officer's to help monitor our state of the art training facility and firing range! If you have considerable knowledge of firearms, range operations, and firearm safety procedures than this is the position for you! As a range safety officer, you will help monitor our beautiful new facility during public shooting hours, assist with training and education on gun safety, and help ensure the safety of all patrons. We provide flexible scheduling during weeknights and weekends. This facility is a multiuse facility open to both public use and law enforcement rentals.
Hours: Saturday, 7:30am-2:30pm.
Additional hours may be needed throughout the week to include evenings and weekends.
Responsibilities
- Ensure safety and firing procedures are followed while in the firing range.
- Make range assignments and explain safety compliance procedures.
- Conduct inspections of range equipment prior to use.
- Clean up and document any damage to the range equipment, inclusive of cleaning up the brass and related debris when the public shooting concludes.
- Ensure safety by inspecting weapons to ensure case weapons only.
- Ensure all posted range rules are followed by users.
- Ensure ammunition checks for correct ammunition.
- Ensure all safety through inspection of eye and ear protection.
- Address safety violations and remove persons from the firing line.
- Implement emergency procedures when necessary. Order immediate cease-fire when any unsafe condition occurs.
- Record lane usage by participants with in and out times. Maintain rules and safety of lane operations.
- Responsible for range clean-up following the scheduled shoots.
- Ensure that range is clear of all unauthorized or underage personnel.
- Ensure that access doors are closed when the firing range is live. Make sure that all emergency communications are working.
- Troubleshoot the range equipment and lighting.
- Work in the office as a cashier collecting range fees and waiver forms and issue range passes.
- Complete range incident reports as required.
- Be physically present on the range at all times that the range is live.
- Occasionally act as a key holder for public safety agencies renting the facility outside of the public shoot times.
- Assist with public access training courses such as youth firearms training and related firearms safety training courses.
- Other duties as assigned by the Lead Range Safety Officer, Range Manager and/or the Professional Standards Police Commander.

- Demonstrates ability to understand and respect the diversity of customers and co-workers, effectively communicating with individuals whose first language may be one other than English.
Knowledge of:
- Firearms
- Ability to work under pressure and remain calm under stressful situations.
- Ability to work in a moderately noisy environment.
About the position type:
This position is considered to be a non-benefit earning, part-time position and is considered to be not-exempt as it relates to overtime with The City of Maple Grove under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Qualifications
Need to have:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must not be prohibited from possessing firearms per Minnesota State Statutes.
Nice to have:
- Certification as a Firearms Instructor and/or Range Safety Officer from a recognized training provider.
- Current of former POST licensed MN law enforcement officer.
- Certified or formerly certified law enforcement armorer.
- NRA range safety officer training.
- Certification in Advanced First Aid/CPR or First Responder
