Minimum Qualifications Of Education And Experience

  • Must possess high school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of experience in the field of plumbing or underground utility construction and maintenance or similar type of work.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota; and obtain a Minnesota CDL Class A driver's license and a tanker endorsement within one hundred and twenty (120) days of employment.

  • Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the job proficiently may be substituted for the above requirements.

Nature of Work

Under general direction of the Infrastructure Supervisor, this position performs skilled work in the operation and maintenance of water distribution system; and wastewater collection system, including lift stations, storm water and flood control systems. May be assigned to one or more functional areas within the department. Daily work is based on organizational values.

Primary Essential Work Functions

  • Performs work related to the operation of the water distribution system, wastewater collection system including lift stations, storm water and flood control systems.
  • Safely performs preventative and corrective maintenance on:
    • Water Distribution System: water mains, hydrants, water valves, new construction
    • Wastewater Collection System: Cleaning and TV inspecting sanitary sewer lines, manhole inspections, new construction.
    • Sanitary Sewer Lift Stations: Inspections and cleaning
    • Storm Water System: Catch basin, manhole structure and pipe repairs, pond and creek inspections and cleaning, new construction.
    • Flood Control System: Flood stations, gate wells, levees, inspections, and operations
  • Safely digs and works in trenches and repairs or installs water and sewer pipes.
  • Safely installs, maintains, and repairs manholes and related equipment.
  • Safely paints, repairs, and services equipment and facilities.
  • Cleans sewer lines.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs valves, hydrants, valve boxes, and related equipment.
  • Performs Gopher State One Call utility tracing to locate underground water, sewer, and storm lines for the public works department, private utilities, contractors, and property owners.
  • Assists with snow removal activities.
  • Performs heavy manual labor.
  • Must be available for emergency overtime work.

  • Performs physical and mental demands and work environment requirements for this position.
  • Attendance during regularly scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
  • Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and community customers.
  • Performs other related work as assigned or apparent.

  • Externally – City of Mankato homeowners and businesses, contractors, vendors, FEMA, Corps of Engineers, MnDOT, Blue Earth County

Supervision

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota; and obtain a Minnesota CDL Class A driver's license and a tanker endorsement within one hundred and twenty (120) days of employment.
  • Satisfactory completion of FMCSA Clearinghouse Queries, background check, physical examination, and drug/alcohol testing.
  • Must meet expectations of the work functions and knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
  • Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
  • Must comply with data practices policies and standards relative to not public data. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished the not public data must be properly stored according to city policy and the Minnesota Statutes.
  • Safety Sensitive Notice. This is a safety sensitive position which requires cannabis pre-employment drug testing. Safety sensitive position means a job in which an impairment caused by drug, alcohol, or cannabis usage would threaten the health and safety of any person.

General working hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and evening, weekend, holidays, and outside of regular hours as necessary.
