Job Summary
To contribute to the public health and fire protection by ensuring that all City fire hydrants are clear of obstructions and flowing properly with adequate and appropriate water volume. In addition to this maintenance, the incumbent also maintains a database identifying flow pressures and locations of the fire hydrants.
Job Duties
- Turns stuck, stubborn, or difficult valves with heavy wrenches.
- Recognizes when hydrants are in need of repair or are not flowing properly or with adequate water volume.
- Reads and comprehends a street map on an iPad.
- Communicates orally, in writing, using a telephone, two-way radio, email and the hydrant flow collector apps.
- Paints hydrants.
- Maintains records of all water hydrant maintenance activities.
- Maintains hydrant flushing according to the pre-determined schedule.
- Maintains a cordial and effective working relationship with coworkers, and the general public.
- Assists other departmental personnel in other projects for the benefit of the City and/or the Department.
- Follows established safety practices for the benefit of themself, coworkers and the general public.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Additional Qualifications
- High school graduate or GED equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- This is not a KPERS covered position.
- Generally, works under the Fire Services shift supervisor (normally a Battalion Chief) but may be required to work in the Department of Utilities as well.
- May be asked to work independently at times.
- Work performed at assigned location(s).
- Works in extreme heat and traverse irregular terrain.
- Work in damp or duty conditions, with occasional exposure to excessive noise.
- Stand, walk, sit, use hands, handle, feel, speak, hear, climb stairs, push, pull or lift up to 50 pounds.
