PURPOSE
Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and improvement of City parks, facilities, and recreational infrastructure. This position operates with limited supervision and is responsible for leading work crews, coordinating projects, and ensuring high-quality maintenance standards across park properties and amenities.
EDUCATION
High school diploma or GED required.
Associate’s or technical college degree with considerable experience within the field of Parks and Recreation maintenance, construction, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
DRIVER’S LICENSE
Valid driver’s license. Must possess or obtain a valid Missouri Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire.
EXPERIENCE
Must have a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of parks maintenance, landscaping, groundskeeping, construction, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
· Advanced knowledge of tools, materials, methods, and practices used in park maintenance, landscaping, and light construction.
· Ability to lead, assign, and review work of seasonal or entry-level staff.
· Working knowledge of irrigation systems, turf management, and park facility maintenance.
· Understanding traffic laws, ordinances, and equipment operation safety standards.
· Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with parks maintenance work.
· Ability to diagnose and perform basic equipment, building, plumbing, and electrical repairs.
· Ability to plan, prioritize, and coordinate maintenance projects and special event setups and tear-downs.
· Ability to work varying shifts, including weekends, holidays, and emergency response (e.g., snow removal).
· Ability to perform heavy manual labor and lift up to 60 pounds regularly.
· Ability to work outdoors in varying and extreme weather conditions.
· Strong communication skills and ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other departments, and the public.
· Ability to follow and provide written and verbal instructions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
· Perform and lead daily maintenance activities including mowing, trimming, planting, irrigation, and landscaping.
· Oversee and participate in park infrastructure maintenance, including pavilions, playgrounds, trails, athletic fields, and facilities.
· Coordinate and assist with set-up and tear-down of recreational programs and special events.
· Operate a variety of equipment including dump trucks, tractors, mowers, loaders, backhoes, and specialized park maintenance equipment.
· Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and facilities.
· Assist in planning and executing seasonal maintenance programs (e.g., aeration, seeding, fertilization).
· Lead or assist with snow and ice removal operations on park roads, parking lots, and walkways.
· Ensure compliance with safety practices and proper use of personal protective equipment.
· Train and provide direction to seasonal and entry-level staff, ensuring quality and efficiency of work.
· Maintain records related to maintenance activities, equipment use, and materials.
· Assist with procurement of supplies and materials for assigned projects.
· Respond to service requests and assist with resolving public concerns in a professional manner.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
· Requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 60 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force
· Equipment: mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, tractors, small hand tools, cleaning tools, various motorized vehicles and equipment
· Work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting and tasting or smelling
· Work has standard vision requirements, vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
· Work requires using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities
· Regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, and exposure to the risk of electrical shock
· Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic)
SUPERVISION
Works under the general supervision of the Parks Maintenance Superintendent.
Provides lead direction and guidance to Maintenance Worker I employees, seasonal staff, and volunteers; does not typically perform formal supervisory functions such as hiring or discipline.
