The Community Development Department is seeking a charismatic, energetic, team-oriented individual that is highly motivated to perform entry to intermediate level professional work conducting professional work concerning land use matters and special subjects such as housing and neighborhood planning, transportation, historic preservation, demographics, and land use planning in the City. The selected incumbent will be part of a diverse planning team with a variety of opportunities for special projects and citizen engagement. Because of the variety of projects and assignments involved, the ideal candidate will be a self-starter, detail-oriented, and have excellent writing, math, communication, and time management skills.
**This position may be filled as a Planner I or Planner II based on qualifications of applicant pool.
Hiring Range for the Planner I: $73,174.40 - 100,609.60 (DOQ)
Hiring Range for the Planner II: $76,814.40 - 105,622.40 (DOQ)
- Supporting the implementation of the Comprehensive Plan, and reviewing and updating the Comprehensive Plan as required;
- Processing site plan and zoning permits, special use permits, rezoning, architectural review board and other land use applications;
- Responding to information requests from developers, City officials, staff, and the public; and
- Preparing studies, reports, and delivering presentations regarding planning activities to the City Council, Planning Commission, and other community organizations.
- Using various software tools, conduct complex data analysis, build and edit GIS maps, and develop multimedia presentations and websites.
Bachelor’s degree in City or Regional Planning, Historic Preservation, Geography, Public Administration or related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must obtain and maintain certification as a Certified Zoning Official (CZO) or AICP within two (2) years of hire; may be required to possess additional certification(s) as deemed necessary by the City; must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver's license.
