Description
Connects and disconnects water utility service, and repairs and replaces water utility meters and components; provides customer service to citizens as needed.
Examples of Duties
Performs water utility repair and maintenance services according to assigned work orders. Connects and disconnects water utility service; records and verifies GPS coordinates. Replaces damaged and defective water meters; performs maintenance and repairs on meters, lines, valves and boxes within scope of authority and training; notifies supervisors of repair problems beyond the scope of authority. Installs, inspects and replaces radio-frequency automatic meter reading components. Responds to customer inquiries and complaints on utility service policy, regulations and rates. Reports any violations of policy and regulations governing utility consumption. Observes and reports utility service problems, potential problems and service irregularities. Assures that meters are registering properly, and verifies irregular meter readings. Checks for water leaks and damage around the meter and meter box; keeps meter box and valve areas clean and unobstructed by clearing overgrowth and debris. Reads residential, commercial, and industrial water meters, and records water consumption data as needed to meet workload demands. Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports problems and emergency situations; maintains daily work logs and incident reports. Operates and maintains vehicles and equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair. Follows departmental policies and procedures; reports City code violations to supervisor. Responds to emergencies as needed. Assists with training and cross-training of staff. Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Requirements
High School diploma or GED equivalent, and two year's Meter Reader experience, preferably in the City of Longview; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License. Ability to acquire a Class D Water Operator license from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) within six months of hire, and a Class C Distribution License within three years.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions; required to perform moderate physical work, and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
