Definition:
Apprentice Lineworker: Participate in an apprentice training program. Learn and perform skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of primary and secondary overhead and underground electrical distribution and telecommunications lines.
Training level of the Lineworker position. Requires acceptance into the City of Longmont’s formal four-year Apprentice program. Incumbent is expected to work as part of a line crew to practice methods and techniques learned through a formal course of classroom and self-study. Incumbent must advance and successfully test at program standards.
Journey Lineworker Perform skilled journey-level work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of primary and secondary overhead and underground electrical distribution and telecommunications lines. Journey-level Electrical Line Crew Worker requiring advancement from the Apprentice Electrical Lineworker program typically requiring at least four years of formal education and training or significant external experience. Incumbent is expected to work independently and perform all functions at a competent level.
Principal Duties:
Apprentice Lineworker:
- Provide assistance to journey lineworker in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of electrical distribution and telecommunications systems.
- Perform manual labor to construct and install distribution and telecommunication lines including climbing poles, structures and ladders, digging holes and trenches, laying conduit, framing and setting poles, and stringing and laying wire.
- Run service loops and make low voltage connections.
- Install and maintain transformers, capacitor, arrestors, switched, conduit, and switchgear on de-energized construction.
- Operate a variety of specialized equipment including the aerial bucket truck, digger boom truck, backhoe, and trencher.
- Operate substation switches for switching operations.
- Respond to, troubleshoot, and repair customer outages.
- Perform a variety of tests of overhead and underground systems including test equipment, cable tester, hipotter, locator, infrared apparatus, and radio/TV noise locator.
Journey Lineworker:
- Perform manual labor to construct and install distribution and telecommunication lines including climbing poles, structures and ladders, digging holes and trenches, laying conduit, framing and setting poles, and stringing and laying wire.
- Install and maintain transformers, capacitor, arrestors, switches, conduit, and switchgear.
- Operate a variety of specialized equipment including the aerial bucket truck, digger boom truck, backhoe, and trencher.
- Operate substation switches for switching operations.
- Respond to, troubleshoot, and repair customer outages
- Perform a variety of tests of overhead and underground systems including test equipment, cable tester, hipotter, locator, infra-red apparatus, and radio/TV noise locator.
- May perform service truck duties as required. Schedule and prioritize work. Meet with customers to troubleshoot and repair problems. Upgrade residential and small commercial service. Monitor power quality issues. Perform skilled work to troubleshoot small power outages and restore power.
Performs essential duties and additional tasks in a manner which enhances City Attributes.

Working Environment:
Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and requires 24-hour availability. There may be occasional periods of irregular and protracted work hours during outages. Work requires ability to lift large heavy objects weighing over 45 pounds and perform strenuous physical labor. Work requires bending, climbing, pulling, carrying, kneeling, walking, and standing for significant periods of time. Work involves exposure to excessive noise, grease and oils, solvents, electrical energy, sun, and irregular terrain. The candidate for this position must be able to meet the physical requirements necessary to do the job.
Qualifications:
Apprentice Lineworker: Successful completion from an accredited Lineworker school. Special Qualifications:Ability to acquire a CDL license within 6 months of hire date. First aid and CPR certification.
Journey Lineworker: Any combination of experience and education equivalent to the completion of the City of Longmont’s Apprentice Lineworker program or at least one-year experience as a Journey Lineworker in an external organization. Special Qualifications: Possession of a valid Colorado CDL Driver’s License. A Journey Lineworker certificate. First aid and CPR certification. On – Call required. Must be able to report on-site within the required response time.
