Job Overview:
The Swim Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality swimming lessons to individuals of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to advanced swimmers. This role involves creating a safe, supportive, and fun learning environment where students can learn and develop their swimming abilities, improve technique, and gain confidence in the water. The Swim Instructor will also promote water safety, assess individual progress, and ensure that all lessons are tailored to meet the needs of each student. Through professional instruction and a commitment to safety, the Swim Instructor will help foster a positive aquatic experience for all participants.
Job Duties and Expectations:
- Teach swim lessons in a progressive manner and routinely communicate student progress reports to appropriate parents and staff.
- Plan and prepare for scheduled classes and/or programs.
- Provide written lesson plans for all classes taught, maintain skills checklists, and complete report cards for students before the last day of class.
- Prepares, cares for, and safely stores equipment used for instruction.
- Maintain an atmosphere of safety during all classes.
- Adhere to City of Longmont philosophies, policies and procedures, including completion and submission of appropriate paperwork in a timely manner.
- Observe, follow, and enforce established policies and procedures of the Division.
- Be courteous and tactful in personal interactions with patrons and staff.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and/or trainings.
- Performs essential duties and additional tasks in a manner which enhances City Attributes.
Experience:
Must be at least 15 years of age. Previous experience in teaching or aiding swim lessons or working in an aquatic environment is preferred. Experience working with children and/or adults in a teaching or coaching capacity. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with swimmers, parents, and team members. Ability to demonstrate swim techniques clearly and provide constructive feedback.
Certifications:
- Swim Instructor certification from a recognized organization (such as American Red Cross, YMCA, or Starfish Aquatics).
OR
- Successful completion of the Longmont Swim Instructor certification class.

Longmont Swim Instructor Course:
- Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays April 7-April 16
- Time: 3:45-7:30 pm
- Location: Centennial Pool and the Longmont Recreation Center
- Price: Free
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (Swim Instructor) Course:
- Days: Tuesday-Friday May 26-29
- Time: 9:00-6:30 pm (with breaks and lunch)
- Location: Sunset Pool
- Price: $70 for pending employees
- 3-5 hours of online content required before the first day
