The City of Long Beach, the Office of Mayor Rex Richardson, and educational partners California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) and California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) invite eligible students and recent graduates to apply for the Long Beach Public Service Corps Program position (LBPSC). The Long Beach Public Service Corps is a paid program designed to increase access to careers in public services. Through hands-on placements in City of Long Beach departments, Corpsmembers gain practical experience, build professional networks, and connect their academic studies to real-world public service work. Up to 30 Corpsmembers will be selected.

Aligning with City Council-adopted priorities, including Strategic Vision 2030 and the Grow Long Beach Economic Development Blueprint, the Long Beach Public Service Corps (LBPSC) fosters economic inclusion and expands opportunities for residents so they can develop successful career paths into public service. Through this program, students and recent graduates will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals, gain insights into the inner workings of City departments, and contribute to meaningful projects that positively impact the Long Beach community. 

Long Beach Public Service Corps is administered by the City’s Economic Development & Opportunity’s Workforce Development Bureau, and funded by California Volunteers, the state office that manages programs and initiatives aimed at increasing the number of Californians engaged in service and volunteerism.

Participation in the program will allow fellows to obtain hands-on work experience, insight into City Government, career development and more. LBPSC is ideal for individuals who would like to explore a career in public service.

Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours over 12 months and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, Non-Career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.Selected participants will:
  • Work up to 1,000 paid hours at $25.09 per hour between September 2026 and August 2027.
  • Be placed in a City of Long Beach department to gain hands-on experience in a professional public sector environment. 
  • Participate in professional development workshops, facility tours, and networking opportunities designed to prepare them for careers in government and civic leadership.
  • Assist with administrative, operational, and project-based assignments, including research, reports, presentations, and collaborative initiatives designed to provide practical workplace experience, transferable skills, and exposure to local government and public service careers.
  • Currently at senior-level standing at CSUDH or CSULB as of Fall 2026 (undergraduate or graduate levels) with a GPA of 2.0 or higher or
  • A recent graduate of CSUDH or CSULB or
  • A recent graduate of a 4-year institution, currently residing in Long Beach
