A fee is required to take the Written Test examination and the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT). REQUIREMENTS TO FILE
A valid driver’s license.- Eighteen (18) years of age or older.
- High school diploma or GED equivalency.
Completion of the FCTC Written Examination and CPAT are required. Applicants must be current and on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List (SEL) by Friday, December 26, 2025. Applicants are encouraged to visit the website fctconline.org for more information and to schedule a testing date as soon as possible. Applicants are encouraged to complete their testing through FCTC before the application filing period.
**It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that your contact information in your FCTC profile matches what you are putting on your application to be accurately matched to the SEL (FCTC ID#, Name, Email Address, Phone Number, etc)**
A Cal-JAC CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) must be completed, and cards must be dated between 12/27/2024 through 12/26/2025.

Willingness to comply with Long Beach Fire Department’s Policies and Procedures, including grooming standards.
Valid California State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification and/or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Certification required at time of conditional job offer (anticipated date of conditional job offer April 2026 for Fire Recruit Academy 2026).
The Long Beach Fire Department will require successful completion of the Physical Ability Test (PAT) through the Long Beach Fire Department prior to interviews in addition to the CPAT through FCTC. Final candidates will be issued a conditional offer of employment and will be required to pass a thorough background investigation and job-related medical and psychological examinations.

Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. This selection procedure will be conducted using a non-competitive process, which means applications are evaluated solely on training, experience, education, or certification. All applicants meeting minimum qualifications will be place on an eligible list. The resulting eligible list remain in effect for at least one year. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.
The City of Long Beach will consider qualified applicants with a criminal history pursuant to the California Fair Chance Act. You are not required to disclose your criminal history or participate in a background check until you receive a conditional job offer.
