Description:

The Logan Library is seeking a new employee to help us spark creation, exploration, and collaboration in our community.

Under general supervision, the Library Technical Assistant's primary responsibilities will be assisting the public while staffing library service desks and assisting Librarians with collections and programming.

The employee will work 40 hours per week, including weekday, weekend, and evening shifts.

Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in Library Science or a closely related area and experience equivalent to three (3) years full-time professional Librarian work, including at least one year of supervisory experience or a combination thereof.
  • A valid Utah Operator License.
  • The ability to reach, push, pull, squat, and move repetitively to retrieve and shelve items on library shelves (with or without a library cart), walking, standing, or sitting for extended time periods (two to four hours), and carrying a reasonable selection of materials between places where they are stored and places where they are used within library facilities and property. May be required to lift/carry materials up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities:

The Assistant Director will:

  • Act on behalf of the Director in their absence;
  • Act as the liaison with Logan City's facilities department;
  • Act as the liaison with the Friends of the Logan Library;
  • Lead the Library's scheduling committee;
  • Lead the Library's safety committee;
  • Act on behalf of other supervisors in their absence;
  • Provide reference and reader's advisor services, and instruct patrons in the use of library resources, including databases, reference materials, catalogs, computers, makerspace equipment, and the interlibrary loan system;
  • Participate in material circulation procedures;
  • Promote library use;
  • Supervise & train staff;
  • Develop and implement operating policies and procedures;
  • Resolve day-to-day operational problems/issues involving staff and/or patrons and provide technical advice to Library staff;
  • Manage a budget and make fiscally responsible purchasing choices in line with Logan City guidelines;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Assistant Director may:

  • Develop one or more of the four primary collection areas, including evaluating and selecting books and other materials;

  • Develop and promote new collections in response to community needs;

  • Manage the library's IT infrastructure;

  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and managing the programs, services, and activities of the Logan Library;

  • Evaluate gifts to the library for appropriateness for inclusion in the collection;

  • Manage traditional and social media marketing to promote library participation in the community, including the maintenance of a calendar of meetings and events, creating newsletters and announcements in various media formats, maintaining the library's social media presence, and assisting in updating information on the Library website;

  • Manage the preparation and dissemination of brochures, news releases, bulletins, posters, and other public relations materials to promote library services outside the library building and host public events outside of the Library;

  • Participate in creating, organizing, and/or delivering public programming related to the relevant collection and/or personal interest;

  • Act as the Library's Public Information Officer (PIO);

  • Lead or support monetary internal control procedures

  • Participate in materials processing and/or repair.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • The ability to communicate effectively orally, in writing, and by listening in the modes of public speaking, speaking with small groups, providing instruction, counseling, and direction, and in preparing notes, memoranda, policies, correspondence, and reports. This includes the direct use of office computers.
  • Basic technology skills, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Internet searching, and resource evaluation.
  • The ability to receive, understand, interpret, and carry out library policies and procedures.
  • The ability to engage in ongoing intellectual effort to maintain up-to-date knowledge of library resources, learning, literature, and information.
  • An understanding that, as a salaried employee, some duties will need to be performed outside normal working hours.
  • This position is classified as exempt and appointed.
