The City of Livermore is accepting applications to fill a full-time Library Assistant position assigned to Cataloging. The work schedule for this position is currently set for Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM (with a 1 hour lunch break). The Livermore Public Library is looking for someone who has direct library cataloging experience. For more information, please refer to the job announcement.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, plans, develops, operates, or leads a work unit of the library, such as circulation, cataloging, materials acquisition, youth services, and automated system; operates and maintains computerized library systems; communicates with library patrons; performs clerical and support functions; and performs other duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a para-professional position with some responsibility for the planning and the operation of a work unit of the library. Incumbents in this classification perform a variety of routine and technical assignments following standard procedures under minimal supervision. This class is distinguished from the Supervising Library Assistant in that the latter has ongoing responsibilities as a first line supervisor.

General supervision is provided by a department or section supervisor.

General Library Duties

Assists patrons in person and by telephone by providing information on library policies and services; provides information and responds to ready-reference questions; resolves complaints using tact and good judgment; operates a computerized circulation system to check-in and check-out library materials, monitors delinquent library materials and any associated fees, and places holds on library items for pick up; searches and catalogs library materials utilizing the library automated system; performs tasks using automated system modules and various manual and electronic ordering programs designed by vendors; plans and implements presentations for children, such as crafts and storytelling; maintains bibliographic records of library holdings; tracks encumbrances and expenditures; monitors computer operation and performance; and creates and distributes printed reports and notices.

Communication and Interaction with the Public and Co-Workers

Courteously interacts with the public in person and on the telephone; promotes good customer relations with library patrons, other agencies, vendors, and City departments; assists library patrons with inquiries and daily library business in a congenial, patient, and professional manner; works in any age level program of the library; develops, plans, and implements programs for a work unit; may provide direction to library clerks, temporary employees, and volunteers; and answers questions and resolves basic operational problems.

Computer Applications

Uses a computer and specialized software to perform word processing, spreadsheet, database, internet, circulation of library materials, and cataloging functions,; enters data and verifies the accuracy of the input; creates and maintains databases; and generates reports and notices.

Based On Assignment, Specialized Functions May Include

Cataloging and Bibliographic Maintenance Duties

Performs copy cataloging and bibliographic editing using OCLC Connexion and Sierra ILS; creates, updates, and maintains MARC bibliographic and item records according to national and local standards (including RDA, Dewey Decimal, and Library of Congress subject headings); applies subject analysis and assigns appropriate call numbers to facilitate user access; maintains bibliographic integrity in the Sierra catalog by identifying and correcting errors, merging records, and updating holdings as needed; supports acquisitions and processing workflows by preparing materials for cataloging and ensuring timely availability of items; collaborates with other staff to ensure consistency and clarity in cataloging practices; participates in developing and maintaining cataloging documentation and procedures; and monitors cataloging trends and recommends improvements to processes and workflows.

Demonstrated Knowledge Of

Library terminology, computer literacy, familiarity with library automated systems, Internet, Windows operating system, Microsoft Office software, and peripheral equipment and processes; effective communication techniques; basic principles and practices of supervision; modern office methods and procedures; and principles and practices of exceptional customer service.

Demonstrated Skills To

Communicate effectively verbally and in writing to give direction and general information about library policies, procedures, and resources; make public presentations; relate to patrons of all age levels; collect money and make accurate change; work well under pressure and interruptions, and be flexible and adapt to changing conditions; use initiative and independent judgment within specified guidelines while performing routine duties; gather and compile information and statistics; initiate, recommend, and implement new procedures to improve operations; utilize computers to perform word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet functions, database management, and other related library functions; prioritize and schedule work assignments; prioritize and plan the work of an assigned unit; and exemplify an enthusiastic, resourceful, and effective service attitude with the public and those contacted in the course of work.

Ability To

Effectively apply the City policies, procedures, terminology, and required knowledge and skills in the daily performance of assigned duties; read, comprehend, and interpret a variety of written materials including library policies and practices.

Experience, Education, And Training Guidelines

Any combination of experience, education, and training that would provide the best qualified candidates. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: Two years of experience in a library or public service setting which included customer service and computer skills. Experience providing lead direction or supervision is desirable.

Education: An Associate degree in library technology or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Training: Any recent training such as academic courses and certification programs which are relevant to this job classification.

License: May require the possession of a valid California Driver's license and a satisfactory driving record as determined by the City.

Other Requirements: Willingness and ability to work any day of the week including weekends, weeknights, and occasionally work scheduled and emergency overtime; and attend meetings, workshops, and seminars during work and non-work hours.

Special Requirements: Essential duties require the mental and/or physical ability to read fine print and computer monitors; converse in person and on the telephone; use a computer keyboard; stoop, bend, reach, and stretch; and strength to safely lift and maneuver items such as books, bins, office equipment, and carts weighing up to 50 pounds.
