Mechanic
Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Director of Public Works, this position repairs and maintains all City fleet, including heavy and small equipment. Diagnoses and troubleshoots equipment and vehicles, conducts preventive routine service and maintenance, performs electrical and hydraulic tests, and welds and fabricates new parts.
Job Responsibilities:
Essential Functions: - Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Maintains equipment and vehicles by conducting routine service inspections, running various tests on parts and systems, diagnosing problems; troubleshooting malfunctions, removing and replacing parts; ordering and picking-up parts; preparing equipment and parts for repair; and testing equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Repairs equipment and vehicles; examines damaged equipment; removes and replaces vehicle components and parts; installs new parts as needed; welds and builds new parts if warranted; takes parts and equipment to external vendor for repair if warranted; test-drives equipment upon completion of repairs.
  • Assists with shop duties by compiling data and records for monthly reports, keeping inventory of shop supplies and materials, and ordering and picking up parts as needed; inspects tools and equipment for potential dangers; records services and repairs completed; answers phones; ensures shop safety; cleans up spills.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Job Requirements
Knowledge of
  • Tools, materials, and equipment used in fleet maintenance and repair work.
  • Vehicle diagnosis and repair methods.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Inventory management.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records.
  • General office policies and procedures; computers and general office equipment.
Skill in
  • Diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining fleet vehicles.
  • Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Preparing accurate reports and statements.
  • Establishing and maintaining strong working relationships.
  • Operating a computer and related software.
Required Experience and Training:
Vocational training in Automotive Repair, welding, and air conditioning, and two (2) years of experience repairing and maintaining vehicles and equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Required Certificates and Licenses:
Must possess a State Vehicle Inspector’s certification or obtain certification within one (1) year of hire.
A valid State driver’s license is required.
Work is performed in an automotive shop and requires exposure to potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, hazardous chemicals, and heat.
Starting Salary:
$45,298 - $48,781 annually (depending on qualifications) - Step increase after successful six month probation.
