Firefighter - EMT

Position Summary
Under general supervision, controls and extinguishes fires, conducts search and rescue missions, responds to medical emergencies, and administers life saving measures. Responds to medical and fire emergencies, treats patients, operates a variety of fire apparatus and vehicles, assists in the investigation of fires, participates in equipment testing and training activities, and compiles and maintains reports and records.

Job Responsibilities
Essential Functions: - Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Performs EMT duties by providing life support care to ill and injured individuals, performing physical examinations, and maintaining communication with the physician on duty at the hospital; transports the ill and injured to the appropriate medical care facility; operates emergency vehicles; cleans and maintains equipment; maintains related continued education, licensure, and certification requirements.
  • Performs various administrative duties; prepares and maintains reports; assists in planning and implementing operations and activities; prepares and analyzes related activity reports; ensures compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Maintains City vehicles, apparatus, and the station by performing inspections, minor preventative maintenance, repairs, and upgrades, scheduling monthly and annual preventative maintenance tasks, and ensuring that all apparatus has been disinfected and is at optimal performance; cleans and organizes fire station and outside grounds.
  • Operates firefighting equipment; conducts fire and safety inspections of City buildings and sprinkler systems; participates in continuing education classes; responds to fire alarms; performs hose, salvage, and overhaul operations; rescues individuals.
  • Drives fire apparatus under emergency conditions in response to alarms; positions apparatus at emergency scenes to ensure operational efficiency and safety of responders; operates the fire apparatus pump to provide water to fire scenes; operates aerial ladders and auxiliary equipment.
  • Conducts public education seminars to inform City patrons and citizens of fire safety and prevention; conducts inspections of residential houses to ensure fire safety and proper smoke detection and alarm devices as requested; may install new devices upon request.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Job Requirements
Knowledge of –
  • Principles, practices, and techniques of modern fire suppression systems and fire prevention.
  • Methods of firefighting, fire prevention, and emergency medical practices.
  • Supervisory principles and practices.
  • Emergency rescue methods and procedures.
  • Work safety practices, procedures, equipment, and protocols.
  • Building and fire protection systems.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and safety regulations.
  • Record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records.
  • General office policies and procedures; computers and general office equipment.
Skill in –
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Interacting tactfully and professionally with City staff, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Maintaining composure in stressful situations.
  • Administering emergency rescue and medical treatment.
  • Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Preparing accurate reports and statements.
  • Establishing and maintaining strong working relationships.
  • Operating a computer and related software.

Required Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent and possession of required certifications; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Required Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
Must possess a Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Firefighter certification.
Must possess a Department of State Health Services Basic Emergency Medical Technician certification.
Must possess a valid Texas Class B driver’s license or obtain license within six (6) months of hire.

Work is performed at City Fire Stations and emergency scenes and requires exposure to extreme weather and temperature, life threatening situations, hazardous chemicals, bodily fluids, and heights. Must maintain a level of physical fitness to adequately complete all job assignments. Operates fire apparatus and fire suppression, EMT, and personal protective equipment.

Starting Salary:
$55,464 Annually, $57,128 Annually after 6 months after successful six-month probation. Annual step increases.
