Position: PARKS SPORTS TURF TECHNICIAN I

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled and semi-skilled custodial and maintenance tasks for the Parks Services Department’s sports turf areas, equipment, facilities, and public grounds in order to maintain acceptable appearance. Work involves operation and preventive maintenance work on a variety of specialized sports turf maintenance equipment. This work is performed under the general supervision of the Parks Services Sports Turf Supervisor, and/or Sports Turf Foreman. Parks Director provides specific directions in problem situations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Operates triplex greens mowers, walking and triplex riding power mowers in cutting grass of sports turf areas;
  • Performs turf, landscape, tree and shrub, and facilities maintenance activities;
  • Trims bushes and low branches of trees in sports turf areas;
  • Operates contour mower to thin out hybrid bermuda grass during the summer months so that winter overseeding may be accomplished without harming the roots of the bermuda grass;
  • Operates machine to allow aerification of turf;
  • Operates power rakes and removes grass and weeds from edges;
  • Mixes chemicals and fertilizers according to predetermined formula and operates spray rig to apply these chemicals and fertilizers to grass for the control of weeds, insects and grass diseases;
  • Mixes and works with cleaning fluids, chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, paints, cleaning agents or similar solutions using normal and specialized protective equipment.
  • Sets up or removes folding tables, chairs, barricades, traffic cones or similar objects;
  • Waters sports turf areas and public grounds;
  • Performs custodial and maintenance duties in and around the buildings of sports turf areas, including painting and minor repairs;
  • Performs construction of sporting fields and landscaped areas or other sports turf related projects.
  • Participates in the care, maintenance and repair of sports turf buildings, grounds and equipment;
  • Performs minor maintenance tasks on motorized equipment such as cleaning, oiling and greasing;
  • Drags, lines and prepares baseball, football, softball and soccer fields
  • Repairs benches, dugouts, playground equipment and sprinklers;
  • Paints building surfaces, bleachers, and picnic tables;
  • Cleans sports turf areas and picks up leaves and litter;
  • Irrigates fields, gardens, and lawns;
  • Performs routine light/heavy maintenance repair and maintains automatic irrigation systems;
  • Cleans offices, recreation rooms, restrooms and locker rooms;
  • Replenishes restroom and locker room supplies;
  • Maintains sports turf facility equipment;
  • Meets the public and answers questions regarding use of sports turf areas;
  • Keeps work, time and materials records;
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service.
  • Assists in set-up, operation, and tear-down at various Recreation Services Department activities held at venues around the City.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:

  • Standard methods, practices, tools and equipment used in developing and maintaining sports turf and public grounds.

Skill in:

  • Use and operation of mowers, spray machines and other standard tools and equipment used in the care and maintenance of a sports facility.
  • Mixing chemicals for treating turf disease.

Ability to:

  • Learn cleaning, maintenance, and gardening methods, materials and equipment.
  • Learn the operation of motorized equipment such as push and riding mowers, string trimmers, edgers and hedge shears.
  • Learn proper use of hand tools such as hammers, wrenches, picks, shovels, spades, rakes, loppers, saws or similar tools.
  • Learn irrigation techniques using sprinklers, hoses and flooding methods.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate orally with co-workers and the general public in a one-to-one setting.
  • Communicate orally in the English language with the public in a one-to-one or group setting.
  • Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation, which takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
  • Keep simple written records.
  • Use mops, brooms, paintbrushes and rollers and work with cleaning fluids, chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, paints, cleaning agents or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.

Work Environment:

  • Travel over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces.
  • Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).
  • Move light objects (less than 20 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet).
  • Bend or stoop repeatedly over time.
  • Work in different weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
  • Lift and work arms above shoulder level.
  • Climb ladders or steps to reach objects.
  • Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.

Additional Requirements:

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the City does not authorize the employee to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
  • This position will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

One year of experience in gardening and care and maintenance of sport turf areas or lawns. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
