The purpose of the class is to operate light to heavy mobile equipment and perform skilled work in installation, support and maintenance of gas distribution systems. The class is responsible for installation and maintenance of gas distribution facilities, meter repair, assisting with disconnecting and connecting service, safety inspections, and maintaining logs and records. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision. Works outside customer residences and businesses. The class works according to some procedures, but decides how and when to do things under general supervision. Requires a high school diploma or GED. This position is an entry-level position in the Gas Department and the employee will receive on-the-job training experience performing general physical labor and experience with light to heavy equipment operation, tools or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge skills, and abilities. Experience in natural gas is preferred, but not required. Basic computer skills required. Weekend, holiday and afterhours work may be required, as well as after-hours response and system emergencies. Requires a valid State of Florida driver license and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL permit within 6 months of employment. Must obtain Class A CDL within one year of employment. Must be able to obtain required all Operator qualifications certifications within 120 days of employment and maintain certifications according to department guidelines. Must obtain National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100, 200, 700, and 800 certificated within 120 days of employment and maintain certifications according to department guidelines. Must be able to obtain Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) certification within 6 months of employment. Must be able to obtain and maintain city required forklift certification and maintain throughout employment Special skills or equipment certification may be required. This position requires participation in Gas Department random drug testing program. In addition, is subject to Federal Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations.
