Career Opportunity
The city of Las Vegas invites applications for Municipal Court Training Specialist. This position provides support, training, and guidance in all aspects of the court processes and systems; serves an important and necessary role in professional development and training on court-related systems; leads, instructs, and motivates judicial staff on the proper use and input of information into the court-related systems, as well as help ensure court staff are taught the proper process and procedure for maintaining the Court’s record and working with related criminal justice agencies; and assists, researches, develops curriculum, organizes, and presents training to staff on new or existing legislative changes, procedures, or in assessed areas for improvement. Receives general supervision from higher level staff.
Examination Process
A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date. The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only. The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.
Eligible List
You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list.
Example of Duties
- Serves as a trainer on newly implemented software systems. Stays abreast of updates and trains staff accordingly. Applies various training techniques and methods while continuously assessing the effectiveness of training.
- Participate in the development of training material. Reviews the developed material for accuracy and develops engaging methods for dissemination of information. Ensures the training is in place to meet organizational needs as they arise.
- Compiles feedback from classes and identifies problem areas to new or existing training programs. Provides information and recommendations for areas of training to administration.
- Conducts skills assessments and tracks proficiency of training to identify training needs and identify retention of information.
- Provides best practice refresher training to Municipal Court employees. Facilitates training under the guidance of the manager /or higher-level management staff.
- Provides post training assistance, including providing documentation, certificates of completion, and completing documentation related to the training of staff.
- Develops frequently asked questions (FAQs) from training sessions and facilitates posting/dissemination of FAQ information. Maintains comprehensive training records, including attendance rosters for all class sessions. Maintains weekly, monthly and annual training calendar. Participates on court related committees as needed.
- Assists with testing updates to Court Management System (eCourt) or any other court software systems. Identifies problems areas and recommends new, or changes to existing, training programs.
- Provides assessment results to supervisors. Provides feedback to supervisors/leadership regarding employees who need additional training or having difficulty mastering material.
- Stays abreast of current trends, technology, and innovations in the field of judicial and employee training, development, and education programming curriculum.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.

- Equivalent to graduation from high school. Higher education desirable.

- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Modern office procedures, methods and common office hardware and software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
- Principles and procedures of record keeping.

- Learning the organization, operation and needs of the department as necessary to assign responsibilities.
- Reviewing the work of clerical support staff in the area of work assigned.
- Interpreting and explaining department policies and procedures.
- Operating a variety of computerized office equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Maintaining accurate and complete court records.
- Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

COMPENSATION
Annual Base Pay Increases
- Negotiated as part of the collective bargaining process.
- Step (Merit) Increase – typically awarded on the anniversary date of hire, up to range maximum.

Retirement
- Benefit eligible employees participate in the Public Employees’ Retirement System of Nevada (PERS). PERS, a statewide defined benefit plan, calculates retirement benefits based on 2.25 percent (current percentage for employees hired 7/1/15 and after)for each year of service, applied to the employee’s highest consecutive 36-month average salary. PERS also requires that employees share 50 percent of the PERS contribution, which is implemented by reducing the city’s salary ranges. The highest consecutive 36-month average salary is increased commensurate with the salary range reductions required by PERS.
Deferred Compensation
- The city offers a 457(b) Plan which is a government deferred compensation plan similar to a 401(k) plan. It offers both pre-tax and after-tax savings and investment options.
Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance
- Employees are covered the first of the month following date of employment. Five medical plans, two dental, and two vision plans are available. City pays 100% of employee premium 50% of dependent premium.
Life and AD&D Insurance
- City provides $20,000 insurance at no cost.
- Additional voluntary life insurance and AD&D insurance available for purchase.
Disability Insurance

City provides a long term disability policy:
- LTD: Employees who normally work at least 30 hours/week are eligible. Benefits may begin after 90 days of an approved disability leave. Payment is up to 60% of earnings, up to $11,000/month, and may not be supplemented with sick or vacation.

VACATION (Hours/Year)

- Maximum accrual: 250 hours, if hired after 12/3/2014
- Sell-back: Up to 60 hours each year; must leave a balance of 40 hours in leave bank.
