Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the full journey level class within the Carpenter series.  Employees within this class perform the full range of duties as assigned.  Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Supervision Received 

Receives general supervision and work assignments from higher level staff.

Examination Process
 A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The examination for this recruitment will be a written examination, weighted 100%, and will be used to place candidates on the eligible list.

Eligible List

You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.

Essential Functions

1. Construct forms.
2. Develops plans, designs and layouts; reads and interprets plans and blueprints, estimates time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisitions materials as required.
3. Repairs damaged dry wall, plaster, ceilings, doors, broken tiles, and playground equipment.
4. Investigates roof leaks, makes necessary repairs, including waterproofing; cleans roof debris and drains.
5. Constructs complete window frames; repairs or replaces window frames and broken windows.
6. Installs acoustical or other ceiling tiles; hangs and tapes drywall and installs other types and forms of paneling.
7. Erects shelters, storage sheds, and bathrooms partitions; inspects and maintains existing buildings; installs and maintains city signs; constructs and repairs chain link fences.
8. Inspects and ensures the safety of various park facilities, including playgrounds and sports fields.
9. Constructs and maintains sports fields, including baseball diamonds and horseshoe pits.
10. Renovates existing facilities to conform with Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
11. Installs custom trim; installs sound proofing panels and other materials in city buildings.
12. Remodels offices in city buildings and facilities; builds, installs, and repairs customized shelves, cabinets, doors and door closures, counters, furniture and other customized projects in city buildings.

Marginal Functions

1. Performs general cleanup at job sites.
2. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
3. Responds to emergencies during evening and weekends.
4. Answers questions and provides information to public and other city employees.
5. Performs minor non-structural welding fabrication and installation projects.

Experience

Two years of increasingly responsible journey-level carpentry experience.

Training

Equivalent to graduation from high school.  Additional specialized training in carpentry or a related field.

License or Certificate

Possession of valid, appropriate driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Within 15 days of initial hire, provide documentation of completion within the last five years of an OSHA-10 course in construction industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention, developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor. Completion card must be continuously maintained while employed in this classification.

When Assigned to Parks

Possession of a Certified Playground Safety Inspector certification from the National Recreation and Parks Association within six months of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.

Knowledge of

Basic principles, procedures and terminology used in the carpentry trade.
Materials and equipment used in the carpentry trades.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Methods and procedures in building construction repair and remodeling.
Blueprints, plans and layout work.

Skills in

Reading and interpreting plans and blueprints.
Repairing or replacing damaged windows, drywall, tiles, roofing, playground equipment and other related carpentry maintenance tasks.
Performing layout work.
Correctly using and applying a variety of carpentry skills.
Working at heights on ladders, scaffolding and electric lifts.
Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Maintaining mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.
