The City of Laramie Parks & Recreation Department is accepting applications for Recreation Program Specialist for our Adventure Kids programming, which includes an afterschool program, summer camps, and special events. This position will begin with our Summer Camp program, which runs mid-June to mid- August, with some training and preparation required prior to the start date.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Work at the Laramie Community Recreation Center, in a team-teaching environment under the supervision of a Youth Program Coordinator and Supervisor.
- Be part of a team responsible for the safety and supervision of up to 80 children each day.
- Plan, organize and teach enrichment activities of a recreational and educational nature for children, grades K-6.
- Provide excellent customer service to patrons and program participants.
- Work with Recreation Staff to provide quality programs and activities, manage set up, tear down and clean up for programs assigned.
- Works with Recreation Program staff to support general recreational programming as assigned.
- Monitor the activities of patrons and program participants to ensure safe and respectful behavior in the facility, enforcing policies and rules as appropriate.
Minimum qualifications:
- Prior training and/or education relevant to working with children.
- Experience working with children in a beyond-school setting
- Ability to guide children through general classroom management techniques, create enthusiasm and inspire learning.
- Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions, common to youth activities.
- Must be dependable, enjoy working with children, and be a team player.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, parents, co-workers, and other Recreation Center personnel.
- Ability to work under direct and indirect supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written; and to follow instructions.
- First aid and CPR certification or willingness to complete provided training.
- Working knowledge of basic computer programs.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit, stand, swim, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, balance, lift 50 lbs., occasionally push or pull 100 lbs., and far and near acuity. Work environment includes exposure to noise, outdoors, confining workspace, chemicals, dust, mechanical and electrical hazards, exposure to blood-borne pathogens, body fluids and tissue, and diseases. Ability to travel to different sites, and ability for evening and weekend work.
