Key Responsibilities
** As a Lifeguard:**
- Monitor swimmers to prevent accidents.
- Enforce all pool rules and facility policies with professionalism and consistency to ensure safety for all users.
- Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies in and around the water. Assist with emergencies elsewhere in the building.
- Administer first aid and CPR as needed.
- Maintain vigilance and professional conduct at all times while on duty.
- Maintain a clean and safe aquatic environment, including assisting with facility cleaning and equipment checks.
- Ensure safety equipment is maintained and accessible.
- Participate in mandatory staff training, in-service trainings, and emergency response drills.
- Provide excellent customer service and foster a positive public image of the aquatics program.
- Plan and lead swim lessons for a variety of ages and skill levels, using American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum.
- Engage participants and adapt instruction to individual needs.
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding swimmer progress and safety.
- Set up and store instructional equipment; maintain a clean and organized teaching space.
- Serve as a positive role model and uphold the City of Laramie's values of safety, inclusion, and professionalism.
- Ability to work under general supervision, remain alert for extended periods, and respond quickly in emergencies.
- Strong swimming ability and ability to pass all skill evaluations, must maintain this ability.
- Comfort working with children and the public.
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to perform both lifeguard and instructional duties as needed.
- Willingness and ability to complete thorough cleaning tasks using light equipment.
- Reliable and independent work ethic; ability to work well in a dynamic, team-based environment.
- Availability for afternoons, evenings, and weekends.
- Required Certifications (must be current or obtained upon hire):
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
- CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
- Standard First Aid
- Preferred Certifications (or ability to obtain within 6 months):
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
- Previous experience teaching swim lessons or coaching aquatic programs
- 1--2 years of prior lifeguard or swim instructor experience
- Must be able to sit, stand, swim, walk, kneel, crouch, twist, climb, and lift up to 50lbs; occasional pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs.
- Must be physically capable of performing rescues and teaching in-water lessons.
- Work environment includes exposure to noise, moisture, chemicals, cleaning agents, mechanical equipment, and body fluids.
- Ability to work early mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Must be able to remain alert and active in both indoor and outdoor environments.
