The City of Lansing is seeking a full-time Wastewater Field Technician to join one of Michigan’s largest wastewater facilities. This position offers an excellent opportunity to apply your skills while performing a variety of tasks related to monitoring and enforcing wastewater discharge regulations for industrial facilities. Responsibilities include conducting inspections, collecting samples, evaluating compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, and ensuring proper operation of pretreatment equipment. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS & TRAINING:

  • A valid Class “D” Michigan Wastewater Operator License is preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license

IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING:

  • Associate Degree in Engineering Technology, Water Technology, Water Resource Management, Industrial Hygiene, or Industrial Environmental Health & Safety and two (2) years of experience in wastewater operations, performing work operating and programming portable sampling and monitoring equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Programs, configure, installs and retrieves flow measuring and sampling equipment to monitor discharges into the City’s sewer systems which requires the ability to lift, haul and move equipment along with the ability to visually calibrate and manipulate control systems.
  • Performs a wide range of work on personal computer systems including entering data and generating spreadsheets of sampling results, requiring finger dexterity and near vision skills to read information off a video display screen.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of pretreatment procedures, policies, and training materials.
  • Analyzes sampling data, inspection reports, and other information to determine if industrial users are meeting discharge limits and other requirements.
  • Ensures proper operation and maintenance of sampling equipment and other tools used in the pretreatment program.
  • Reviews operating manuals and technical materials to stay current on regulations and best management practices.
  • Repairs and maintains sampling and flow monitoring equipment and maintains records of all maintenance activity.
  • Develops and fabricates tools, hardware and equipment for use as required in the sampling operations.
  • Performs field sampling to measure pollutants and loadings at specific locations in the City.
  • Collects and maintains records of City rainfall data.
  • Assists the Industrial Surveillance Supervisor in investigating chemical spills and illegal discharges into the City’s sewer system and assists with coordinating enforcement actions when necessary to ensure compliance with pretreatment standards.
