We are hiring for either a Maintenance Technician or a Maintenance Specialist Steps 2-4, dependent upon qualifications.
PAY RATES:
Maintenance Tech (Step 1): $23.92/hr
Maintenance Specialist (Step 2): $29.90/hr
Maintenance Specialist (Step 3): $33.79/hr
Maintenance Specialist (Step 4): $38.18/hr
Maintenance Technician Job Description
Operates dump trucks, as well as other equipment and tools, and labors in the daily operation of maintenance crews in the Maintenance Division of Public Works.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion. Employees must be able to perform the essential duties of this job with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Labors and drives dump trucks and snowplows, as well as other equipment for asphalt repair work, digging ditches, cleaning gulches, cleaning inlets, laying pipes, repairing pipes, grading roads, etc.
  • Assists in repairing water and sewer breaks.
  • Performs other maintenance duties as needed, including laboring on various crews, cleaning equipment, yard work and office functions.
  • Plows and sands City streets during winter months.
  • Adjusts, inspects, cleans and performs minor maintenance on vehicular and non-vehicular equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains tools; cleans work and shop area.
  • Performs physically arduous work outdoors.
  • Logs daily work activities and inspection records of City facilities.
  • Requires regular and prompt attendance.
  • Follows prescribed safety measures. Must maintain and utilize City-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting activities where the employee is exposed to risks above those encountered in a traditional office setting. If injured on-the-job due to failure to utilize PPE a safety violation can be taken.
  • On-call duty on a rotating basis (voluntary except for the water, sewer, and snow/ice control section where it is mandatory).
  • Position requires a criminal background check and a post-offer/pre-employment physical and drug test examination.
  • Performs all other tasks as assigned.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from the Maintenance Crew Leader and Maintenance Leadperson.

Education and Experience
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of vocational or college-level courses preferred.
  • Experience: None required. Experience in Public Works Maintenance operations or construction preferred.
Certification/Licenses/Specialized Training
  • Valid CDL Class B license with air brake endorsement and tanker endorsement (or ability to obtain in 6 months).
  • Flagger certification (or ability to obtain in 6 months).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability and willingness to perform any and all tasks required to complete work projects, including general laboring.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills to perform as a laborer on the following operations:
    • pothole patching
    • major street patching/paving/rolling
    • sweeper operation and support
    • snow and ice control
    • drainage operations
    • water and sewer operations
  • Skills in the operation of the following hand tools:
    • Rakes, shovels and picks
  • Must be able to interact and communicate effectively with others in a positive manner.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • Ability to work and be productive without constant supervision.
  • Ability to serve as positive role model to other employees.
  • Ability to maintain a businesslike attitude, placing priority on services for Lakewood citizens.

Maintenance Specialist Job Description
The Maintenance Specialists – Steps 2, 3 and 4 are part of a Maintenance Step Structure career path series. These jobs will operate equipment and labor in the daily operation of maintenance crews in the Maintenance Division of Public Works. Ability to advance within the Maintenance Step Structure requires a minimum overall rating of “Meets Expectations” as well as the additional qualifications listed below.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

All Step Levels:
  • Labors and operates loaders, dump trucks, snowplows, as well as other equipment for asphalt repair work, digging ditches, cleaning gulches, cleaning inlets, cleaning storm and sanitary sewer lines, laying pipes, repairing pipes, grading roads, etc.
  • Performs other maintenance duties as needed, including laboring on various crews, cleaning equipment, yard work and office functions.
  • Assists in repairing water and sewer breaks.
  • Plows and sands City streets during winter months.
  • Trains and instructs new employees.
  • Adjusts, inspects, cleans and performs minor maintenance on vehicular and non-vehicular equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains tools; cleans work and shop area.
  • Performs physically arduous work outdoors.
  • Logs daily work activities and inspection records of City facilities.
  • Performs on-call duty on a rotating basis; voluntary except for water, sewer, and snow/ice control section which are mandatory.

  • Operates patch trucks, bobcats, sewer cleaners, and street cleaning equipment as well as other equipment.
  • Fills in as maintenance lead person in absence of lead person, which includes giving instruction in the field.
  • Assists in coordinating daily work schedules.
  • Reads, repairs and operates water meters and related equipment.
Step 4 (In addition to above for All Step Levels):
  • Acts as lead worker for Maintenance Division work crews. Gives positive direction to crew members, organizes daily work activities and ensures work projects are completed in a quality and efficient manner.
  • Fills in as Maintenance Crew Leader in absence of Supervisor which includes giving instruction in the field and checking on overall progress of work crews on a daily basis.
  • Gives regular feedback to supervisory staff on employee performance and project status.
  • Operates backhoes, excavators, graders, vacuum inlet cleaning equipment and street cleaning equipment as well as other equipment.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and project specifications.
  • Ensures that all crew members perform their work efficiently while following prescribed safety measures.
  • Assists in coordinating daily work schedules.
  • Assists in locating and buying materials.
Reporting Relationships
Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from the Maintenance Crew Leader, Maintenance Supervisor and/or Maintenance Superintendent
Supervision Exercised: Steps 2 and 3 have no supervisory responsibilities; Step 4 leads section employees in accomplishing construction, maintenance and repair tasks.

Step 4 (In addition to above for All Step Levels):
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill to perform as a laborer, truck driver, light and heavy equipment operator and lead person on the following operations:
    • Sweeper operation and support
  • Skill in the operation of the following hand tools:
    • Pipe cutter
  • Ability to give direction and guidance to other employees
  • Ability to effectively plan and organize work operations
  • Ability to effectively lead others and give direction in a positive, constructive manner
  • Knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to objectively evaluate and provide input on employee performance
  • Ability to read blueprints and plans, perform construction surveying, and read construction stakes
Education and Experience
All Step Levels:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Preferred Qualifications: Service on Division, Department or City-wide committees; and vocational or college-level courses
Step 2 (In addition to above for All Step Levels):
  • Experience: 6 months’ experience in Lakewood’s Maintenance Division and successful completion of probationary period
  • Preferred Qualifications: Successful completion of training in interpersonal skills; supervisory skills; and technical aspects of public works maintenance operations
Step 3 (In addition to above for All Step Levels):
  • Education: Successful completion of training in technical aspects of public works maintenance operations
  • Experience: Two years’ experience in Lakewood’s Maintenance Division or a construction-related field
  • Preferred Qualifications: Successful completion of training in interpersonal and supervisory skills
Step 4 (In addition to above for All Step Levels):
  • Education: Successful completion of training in technical aspects of public works maintenance operations; interpersonal skills; supervisory skills; and intermediate computer skills
  • Experience: Five years’ experience in Lakewood’s Maintenance Division or a construction related field

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Must successfully complete and maintain required state or departmental physical standards and certifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Lifting and Carrying
Must lift items from levels that include: floor level or from below the knee; knee through chest level and above the shoulder level that may weigh in excess of 100 pounds. Items to be lifted may include, but are not limited to, rocks, oil bags, manhole rings, metal and plastic pipe, concrete bags, animal carcasses etc. Items in excess of 100 pounds will be lifted from all levels using mechanical or second person lift assistance. Items to be lifted above shoulder level weighing in excess of 50 pounds, require mechanical or second person assistance.
Body Positions
Required positions may include awkward postures as well as standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling, pinching, gripping, crouching, reaching, climbing, balancing, crawling, and twisting. Will stand and move about on both even and uneven terrain. Must use high force to manipulate equipment and valves. Motions can be repetitive, e.g., when raking and/or shoveling. Sitting to operate equipment and drive between jobs.
Carrying, Maneuvering, Pushing, Pulling
May manipulate (push, pull or carry) items weighing in excess of 100 pounds with assistance as described below. Must be able to carry items distances of plus/minus 25 feet. Items to be manipulated include raking and shoveling asphalt, electric tools, rocks/drainage maintenance, pull swing gate, jack hammer (70 and 90 pound weight) and manhole covers. The following are examples of items to be manipulated weighing in excess of 100 pounds where manipulation should only be performed using mechanical or second person lift assistance: jumping jack compactor, boulders, sander plates, full roll petromat, concrete pipe and inlet grates. Will constantly manipulate (push, pull, twist) a variety of tools.
Hearing
Must be able to hear and respond to in person communication. Must also hear radio transmissions, pagers, back-up alarms and telephones.
Vision
Uses vision for reading and depth perception, for excavating tasks, awareness of equipment in surroundings, driving, surveying and performing traffic control.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Mathematics
Must have basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, algebra and formula-solving skills.
Language Ability
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Remembering
Must remember repair techniques, CDL inspection requirements, equipment operation, snow routes, street directions and instructions given.
Reasoning
Must make safety- related decisions when operating equipment, performing job tasks, setting up traffic control and plowing and sanding streets.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Physical conditions may be uncomfortable or unpleasant and include exposure to noxious fumes, gases, loud noises, severe vibrations, smog, hot tar and asphalt, dust, chemical agents, and proximity to moving vehicles as well as working in traffic. Most work is performed out of doors, under all weather conditions, in and around the City's Public Works facilities. Frequent contact with employees in the unit. Work involves dealing with citizens who may become upset. Workload may be heavy.
