We're seeking a dedicated and versatile Community Service Officer to join our team! In this non-sworn, essential role you'll be on the front lines, assisting with diverse tasks that keep our city safe and running smoothly. From directing traffic at incident scenes and assisting with crime scene operations to managing our gun range and facilitating bail money exchanges, your contributions will be critical.

Beyond immediate public safety, you'll play a vital role in maintaining city facilities, delivering confidential documents, and coordinating vehicle repairs. You'll also be instrumental in crime prevention initiatives and promoting animal control throughout the city, including investigating animal bites and safely handling animals in violation of ordinances.

This position is scheduled to work four (4) - 10 hour days, Wednesday through Saturday.

  1. Assist with various tasks including traffic direction at scenes, maintaining the gun range, making public service calls, making bail money exchanges, fingerprinting, prisoner transports, and assisting with crime scenes as directed. 
  2. Perform various assigned duties including light building maintenance, city packet and confidential document deliveries, processing found property, providing building tours, and arranging for repair and maintenance of department vehicles. 
  3. Assist with city and community functions in the area of crime prevention.  
  4. Work with contract agencies to promote animal control within the city.  Investigate animal bites and capture injured or dangerous animals.  Be aware of regular surroundings in order to search for animals that are in violation of the city's animal control ordinance.  
  5. Pick up and transport animals as appropriate, and assist with the disposition of lost or abandoned animals.  Complete dog bite reports and any other necessary follow-ups. 
  6. Provide general information to park users regarding park ordinances, regulations, safety, and location of facilities.  Assist with the enforcement of ordinances and regulations for the park systems and facilities and issue citations if and when required. 
  7. Assist with the coordination of scheduled and unscheduled park events and conduct on-going visual checks through the park system for maintenance and safety problems. 
  8. Operate a police vehicle safely and in accordance with state law, city ordinances, and department policies. 
  9. Perform other duties as apparent or assigned. 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to follow both written and oral directions.
  • Demonstrated experience in the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated experience using computers.
  • Ability to choose the correct action based upon learned policy.

     
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record. 
  • Will be required to successfully complete the following:
    • Lakeville PD's field training CSO program.
    • Background investigation.
    • Pre-employment physical and drug screen.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working within a police environment.
  • A desire for longevity as a Community Service Officer.
  • Certified in CPR and First Responder.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

This work requires: 

  • regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; 

  • work regularly requires sitting and speaking or hearing, frequently requires using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; 

  • work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; 

  • vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; 

  • hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; 

  • work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; 

  • work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; 

  • work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
